Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has agreed to a new four-year contract, extending his stay at the club until 2030. The 26-year-old’s previous agreement was set to conclude next summer, but he has chosen to commit his future under the guidance of new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Foden expressed his enthusiasm for the extension, stating that committing his future to City means everything to him. He emphasized that playing for the club has always been his aspiration and wearing the shirt remains an honour. He also acknowledged being part of a historic period marked by numerous titles and looks forward to pursuing more.
The midfielder made his first-team debut for Manchester City as a 17-year-old under former manager Pep Guardiola. Since then, he has accumulated 369 appearances for the club, contributing to multiple title wins, including six Premier League titles, one Champions League, and two FA Cups. According to one report, he has scored 110 goals for the first team since his debut.
Foden’s Career Trajectory and Future
Foden’s career at Manchester City has seen him become one of the club’s most decorated players, alongside John Stones and Bernardo Silva, who both departed the Etihad Stadium this summer. He has secured 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, and three Community Shields.
Despite his achievements, Foden was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in May, following a season where he made only 23 Premier League starts. The Professional Footballers’ Association suggested that Foden had been a “victim” of the demanding fixture schedule, noting that he had not performed at the level seen two years prior.
Foden is eager to collaborate with Enzo Maresca once more, having previously worked with him when Maresca served as an assistant to Pep Guardiola during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 season. Foden described Maresca as brilliant during that period, someone all the players respected and enjoyed working with. He added that having Maresca back at the club is exciting.
Performance and Role Evolution
Over the past six seasons, Foden is one of only three Premier League players to have scored 10 or more goals in all competitions, a group that also includes former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins. His performances peaked the year after City’s Treble-winning season, where he recorded a career-high of 27 goals and 12 assists.
However, the subsequent two campaigns have shown a decrease in productivity, with Foden’s role within the team evolving. Last season, the presence of faster options like Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo, who supplied striker Erling Haaland from wide positions, along with Rayan Cherki often being preferred as a playmaker, meant Foden occasionally played in a deeper position.
This shift in role reportedly limited his opportunities to score and provide key passes. Last season, Foden scored seven goals and provided five assists in 33 Premier League games. In the campaign before that, he scored seven goals and made two assists across 28 top-flight matches. His debut for Manchester City occurred in a Champions League game against Feyenoord on November 21, 2017.
