The Netherlands secured the top position in World Cup Group F following a 3-1 win against Tunisia in Kansas City. The Dutch side demonstrated their attacking intent early in the match, establishing a two-goal lead within the initial seven minutes of play.
Ronald Koeman’s team opened the scoring in the third minute when Tunisia’s Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently directed a cross into his own net. Shortly after, Brian Brobbey extended the lead, tapping in a header from Virgil van Dijk following a free-kick. This own goal was noted as the 12th of the tournament, equalling a record.
Second Half Action and Dutch Response
Despite the comfortable lead, Tunisia briefly threatened a comeback early in the second half. A corner kick found Hazem Mastouri, who headed the ball into the bottom-left corner, reducing the deficit. However, the Netherlands responded quickly, with Jan Paul van Hecke restoring their two-goal advantage from another corner.

Tunisia created some opportunities later in the game but were unable to alter the scoreline further, ultimately exiting the tournament without earning a point. The Netherlands, meanwhile, comfortably advanced to the last 32 of the competition. Ronald Koeman expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that achieving first place in the group was the objective.
Tunisia’s coach, Herve Renard, offered a frank assessment of his team’s performance, acknowledging that they were not at the required level for the World Cup, especially given the strength of the teams in their group. He had taken over as manager after Tunisia’s opening match and had previously managed five different African national teams.
Group F Outcomes and Upcoming Fixtures
In the other final match of Group F, Japan and Sweden secured their places in the knockout phase after a 1-1 draw in Dallas. This result meant Japan progressed in second place behind the Netherlands, while Sweden advanced as one of the top third-placed teams.
The Netherlands are now scheduled to face Morocco in the Round of 32 in Monterrey. Koeman acknowledged that while his team had become comfortable at times during the match against Tunisia, they would need to improve for their next fixture against Morocco, an attacking team with players familiar from the Eredivisie.

Koeman also defended Frenkie de Jong from media criticism, noting that the midfielder had performed well after being included in a strong squad. The Dutch team will remain at their training base in Kansas until 24 hours before their match against Morocco, which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30.
Japan will play against Brazil in Houston, Texas, on Monday, June 29. Sweden’s opponent in the Round of 32 will likely be the winner of Group I, which could be either France or Norway, with that match taking place on Tuesday, June 30, in New Jersey, New York.
The Netherlands demonstrated their ability to respond to challenges during the game, immediately restoring their two-goal cushion after Tunisia scored. A delightful chip from Tijjani Reijnders hit the crossbar, and substitute Memphis Depay nearly connected with an acrobatic effort late in the match.
