A bomb hoax led to the evacuation of a Peter Kay show at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham on Saturday night, causing panic among audience members. The incident unfolded about 45 minutes into the performance when staff received a report about a suspicious bag.
As a precaution, West Midlands Police advised the venue to evacuate. Audience members were asked to leave without being told exactly what was happening. “Ladies and gentleman, we’re going to have to ask you all to leave due to unforeseen circumstances,” announced an event staff member on stage.
Many attendees expressed confusion and concern. “To be honest, I thought it was part of the show at first,” said Steve Aspinall, who attended with friends. “It was very swift. One minute [Kay’s] on stage and the gig is great, then two of the event team walk on stage straight to him,” added Miranda Richardson, describing how quickly the situation escalated.
Following thorough searches by police, they confirmed that nothing suspicious was found. However, a 19-year-old man has been charged over the bomb hoax that prompted this chaotic scene.
The safety and security of customers and colleagues is the highest priority for the venue. Ticket holders will be contacted regarding the incident and any further developments.
