Real Madrid’s Reported Interest in Dias
Real Madrid is reportedly showing interest in signing Manchester City defender Ruben Dias. Reports suggest that Jose Mourinho, who has returned to the Spanish club for his second tenure as manager, has identified Dias as a primary target to strengthen the team’s defence this summer. The club’s president, Florentino Perez, is said to be prepared to provide financial backing for Mourinho’s transfer ambitions.
An initial offer for the Portuguese centre-back is reportedly being prepared. One report indicates that Real Madrid could offer £80m in an attempt to secure Dias’s transfer. This comes despite Real Madrid recently confirming a new contract for Antonio Rudiger, who is set to continue with the club for another season.
Dias is currently part of Portugal‘s World Cup squad and is focused on the tournament. However, the prospect of a move to Real Madrid is described as potentially difficult for Dias to resist, especially with Mourinho reportedly seeing him as a defensive partner for Rudiger.
Manchester City’s Stance on Potential Departure
Manchester City, however, is reportedly determined to fend off any approach from the La Liga giants. The club views Dias as an integral part of their squad, especially following the departure of John Stones, which has reportedly heightened Dias’s importance.
Incoming City manager Enzo Maresca reportedly considers Dias essential to his plans at the Etihad. This suggests that Manchester City would be tough negotiators if Real Madrid were to make an official approach this summer. Dias’s contract with Manchester City runs until 2028.
Dias joined Manchester City from Benfica for £60m in 2020. Since then, he has been part of the team that has clinched 11 major trophies, including the Treble in 2023. Some reports suggest that having achieved significant success in Manchester, Dias might be tempted by a new challenge.

While Dias is seen as a key leader within the Manchester City squad, some reports speculate that he might consider a new challenge if he perceives his chances of regular first-team football diminishing. Manchester City has several centre-backs in their squad, including Dias, Abdukodir Khusanov, Josko Gvardiol, and Marc Guehi, with Vitor Reis also expected to be part of the squad for the upcoming season.
Other Transfer Speculations and Context
Real Madrid has been linked with several Manchester City players this summer. Josko Gvardiol was previously named as a target, but he is reportedly set to sign a contract extension with Manchester City. Rodri was also mentioned as a target for the UEFA Champions League winners, but he also appears likely to remain at City.
Real Madrid has, however, secured the transfer of Bernardo Silva, who is set to join the Spanish club on a free transfer once the current tournament concludes. Manchester City is reportedly powerless to prevent this move, as Silva’s contract situation allows him to embark on a new chapter after his career at City.
Despite the interest in Dias, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly acknowledges that a double swoop for both Dias and Rodri from Manchester City would be virtually unachievable. The focus on strengthening the central defence for Real Madrid comes even with the new contract for Rudiger and the imminent signing of Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer.
The World Cup is currently underway, with a Sky promotion offering discounts on Glass TVs until June 17.
