Crystal Palace have reached an agreement in principle for Pierre Sage to become their new head coach. The club is reportedly close to finalising a compensation package with Sage’s current team, RC Lens, for the French coach.

Sage is expected to sign a contract that would run until the summer of 2029, with an additional option for a further year. This move follows Oliver Glasner‘s decision not to extend his contract at Selhurst Park, which is set to expire on June 30.

Search for a New Head Coach

Crystal Palace had initially identified Andoni Iraola as their primary target to succeed Glasner. However, Iraola subsequently became the head coach for Liverpool, leading Palace to shift their focus. Reports indicate that Palace had made a proposal to Iraola, but he ultimately agreed to a two-year contract with Liverpool.

Following Iraola’s move, Palace turned their attention to Sage. The club held discussions with the Lens manager and initiated contact with the Ligue 1 side to negotiate a financial arrangement for his release from his current contract. Other names considered for the role included Frank Lampard, Kieran McKenna, and Sean Dyche.

Sage, who is 47, took over as Lens manager in June of the previous year. Under his leadership, Lens achieved a second-place finish in Ligue 1. He also guided the team to victory in the Coupe de France, marking the first time in the club’s 120-year history that they had won the competition, beating Nice in the final.

Sage’s Coaching Philosophy and Achievements

Both Crystal Palace and Pierre Sage have recently experienced success in securing trophies. Crystal Palace has won multiple major trophies over the last 12 months, which are noted as the first pieces of silverware in their history. These achievements include the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Conference League, all secured under the guidance of former boss Oliver Glasner, marking what has been described as a golden era for the club.

Sage’s tenure at Lens has also been highlighted by significant accomplishments. He led his Ligue 1 team into a title race against European champions Paris Saint-Germain during the recent season, with Lens holding the top position at the end of February. His main achievement at Lens was the victory in the Coupe de France, which was the club’s first trophy.

Sage has a history of coaching with a back three system, a formation that Glasner also effectively utilised at Crystal Palace. During his time at Lens, Sage was able to develop an attack-minded team, even though they did not consistently dominate possession in their matches. This tactical approach and his recent success suggest a potential continuation of the style of play established during Glasner’s period at Selhurst Park.

While Sage has not previously managed in the Premier League, this was also the case for Glasner before his arrival in south London. The agreement in principle signifies a new chapter for Crystal Palace as they look to build on their recent successes and continue their development under new leadership.

Glasner’s final match in charge

Crystal Palace will face Rayo Vallecano in the Europa Conference League final in Leipzig, marking a significant moment for the club and their manager, Oliver Glasner. This match represents Glasner’s last in charge, as he prepares to depart after a transformative tenure at the club.

Glasner, who has been pivotal in guiding the team through a tumultuous season, expressed his hopes for a fairytale ending. He stated, “The best day is still to come in Leipzig,” indicating his belief that victory in the final would cap off a remarkable journey for both him and the club.

Path to the final

The road to Leipzig has been anything but straightforward for Crystal Palace. Their European adventure began with a play-off against Fredrikstad, and despite early struggles, including a shocking FA Cup exit to Macclesfield, the team rallied to reach the final. After a difficult winter where they faced a ten-match winless streak, Glasner managed to inspire the players to recover and advance through the knockout stages of the Conference League.

Palace’s journey included a memorable victory over Fiorentina in the quarter-finals and a commanding performance against Shakhtar Donetsk in the semi-finals, where they won 5-2 on aggregate. The team has shown resilience and unity, with players like goalkeeper Dean Henderson stepping up as leaders following the departure of captain Marc Guéhi.

Henderson, who has faced personal challenges, including a period of depression after winning the FA Cup, has emerged as a key figure in the squad. His experience and leadership will be crucial as they prepare for the final against a Rayo Vallecano side that has proven difficult to break down.

Dean Henderson enjoys the moment after Crystal Palace booked their place in the Conference League final by seeing off Shakhtar Donetsk.Photograph: Dylan Martinez/Reuters

A season of highs and lows

This season has been marked by significant highs and lows for Crystal Palace. The club’s successful run in the FA Cup last year, culminating in their first major trophy, provided a strong foundation. However, the subsequent UEFA ruling that stripped them of their place in the Europa League added pressure and disappointment.

Despite these setbacks, the team has shown remarkable character. The bond among the players has been highlighted by new arrivals like Brennan Johnson, who noted the “unbelievable” camaraderie within the squad. This unity has been essential in overcoming the challenges faced throughout the season.

As they head into the final, Palace’s players are determined to deliver a performance that honours Glasner’s legacy. The club’s history, which includes a period of administration in 2010, has instilled a sense of resilience and appreciation for their current achievements.

A Crystal Palace fan poses with a giant team photo in Leipzig ahead of the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano.Photograph: Jordan Pettitt/PA

Fans’ journey and support

The fanbase has played a crucial role in this journey, with supporters travelling across Europe to cheer on their team.
Crystal Palace is on the brink of a significant moment as they prepare for their first European final, facing Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League. This match marks the culmination of a tumultuous season under the management of Oliver Glasner, who has announced his departure from the club following the final.

The journey to Leipzig has been anything but straightforward for Palace. The season began with the euphoria of winning the FA Cup for the first time, defeating Manchester City in the final. However, the joy was soon overshadowed when UEFA ruled that Palace would be relegated from the Europa League to the Conference League due to ownership rule violations involving shareholder John Textor and his stake in Lyon.

The decision led to protests from fans and a sense of injustice within the club. Despite the rocky start, Palace adapted, embarking on a remarkable unbeaten streak of 18 games across all competitions. However, the pressure of balancing a European campaign with domestic duties proved challenging, particularly after the loss of key players like Eberechi Eze and Marc Guéhi.

As the season progressed, Palace’s form fluctuated, with a disappointing exit from the FA Cup and mixed results in the league. Glasner’s announcement of his intention to leave added to the uncertainty, but the team found its rhythm in the knockout stages of the Conference League, overcoming teams like Fiorentina and Shakhtar Donetsk to reach the final.

Glasner’s impact on the team has been profound, transforming the mentality at Selhurst Park and instilling a belief that they could compete on a European stage. His departure will leave a significant void, as he has been instrumental in the club’s recent successes, including lifting the Community Shield after the FA Cup triumph.

Palace’s upcoming match against Rayo Vallecano is particularly poignant, as both clubs share a working-class ethos and a history of underdog status. The final represents not just a chance for silverware but also a farewell to Glasner, who has expressed his fondness for the people at the club, highlighting the connections he has made during his tenure.

As the team prepares for the final, the atmosphere among the fans is electric, with thousands expected to travel to Leipzig. This match is not just about the trophy; it is a celebration of the journey that has brought Palace to this point, from near liquidation to potential European glory.

With the final set to take place soon, Palace fans are ready to support their team in what promises to be an unforgettable night.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently facing a challenging season, having finished 17th in the Premier League last year, marking the worst campaign in the club’s history. The team is struggling, sitting just one point above the relegation zone and has not won a Premier League match in 2026.

Latest Developments

In a significant blow to Crystal Palace, Jean-Philippe Mateta will be unavailable for the upcoming match against Tottenham due to injury. This absence adds to the challenges faced by Crystal Palace, who have already lost Maxence Lacroix to suspension and have Eddie Nketiah and Cheick Doucoure sidelined with injuries.

Despite these setbacks, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner remains optimistic about Mateta’s recovery. He expressed hope that Mateta could return to action before the international break at the end of March.

Reactions from Key Parties

Igor Tudor, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, commented on the upcoming match, stating, “We have had a good, short period to prepare for this game. I saw the guys reacting well and we need to be optimistic for the game, playing at home against a good team, but in our stadium with our fans so we want to do a good game tomorrow.”

Glasner also highlighted the importance of the upcoming matches, saying, “Now we are starting the crunch time in the UEFA Conference League. We are starting the crunch time in the Premier League. We are on top of it.”

What Lies Ahead

The match between Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur is scheduled to kick off at 8pm UK time on March 5, 2026. Observers will be keen to see how both teams perform, especially with the stakes high for Tottenham as they look to avoid relegation and for Crystal Palace as they aim to solidify their mid-table position.

Brennan Johnson, who gained hero status at Tottenham Hotspur after scoring the winner in the Europa League final last summer, departed the club in January 2026. His transfer to Crystal Palace was marked by a club-record fee of £35 million, reflecting the high expectations placed on the young forward following a season in which he scored 18 goals for Tottenham.

Since joining Crystal Palace, Johnson has faced challenges on the pitch. He has played a total of 648 minutes without finding the back of the net, although he did register his first assist in a match against Manchester United. His performance has been described as underwhelming, especially considering the significant investment made by Crystal Palace.

During his time at Tottenham, Johnson was coached by Thomas Frank, who noted that the arrival of new players can impact a player’s opportunities. Frank stated, “Brennan is a very important player for us. Sometimes things change if another player comes in. Unfortunately, Kudus came in, played on the right side and did well, so it has been a little bit trickier (for Johnson) to get enough starts.” This comment highlights the competitive nature of the squad and the adjustments Johnson has had to make since his transfer.

Now under the management of Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace, Johnson’s playing style, which relies on making runs behind defenses, has not been effectively utilized. Glasner has expressed his support for Johnson, emphasizing the need for him to focus on his natural abilities rather than feeling pressured to prove himself. “I hope he doesn’t want to prove (himself). I spoke to him and I think it’s important for him to be Brennan Johnson, not to prove something. He doesn’t need to prove anything. He is such a great player. He has everything you need as an attacking player — incredible skills,” Glasner remarked.

Despite the optimism from his manager, Johnson’s transition to Crystal Palace has coincided with a destabilizing period for the club. The pressure to perform is palpable, and observers are keenly watching how he adapts to his new environment. Johnson has made 12 appearances for Crystal Palace, including 7 starts, but the lack of goals raises concerns about his integration into the team.

Johnson’s situation has drawn mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike. Some express frustration over his current form, while others remain hopeful that he will find his footing. Lucy Zelic, a commentator on the situation, voiced her displeasure, stating, “This is just f***ing embarrassing. This is a blatant PR exercise that Marcus was told to do, nothing more.” Such comments reflect the scrutiny that comes with high-profile transfers.

As Johnson continues to navigate this challenging phase of his career, the focus will be on how he can leverage his skills to contribute effectively to Crystal Palace. With Glasner’s support and the need for adaptation, observers are left to wonder what the future holds for the young forward.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the club’s strategies to better utilize Johnson’s talents, but the coming weeks will be crucial for both him and Crystal Palace as they seek to improve their standing in the league.

The upcoming clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace on March 5, 2026, raises significant questions about Tottenham’s precarious position in the Premier League. Currently, Tottenham have not won a league match in 2026 and sit just two points above the relegation zone, making this match critical for their survival in the top tier of English football.

Tottenham’s recent form has been alarming; they have gone 10 Premier League games without a victory and have won only one of their last 13 home games. This dismal run has left them languishing in 16th place in the league table, and they are now facing serious threats of relegation. A recent quote highlights the gravity of the situation: “Tottenham are staring down the barrel and are seriously threatened by Premier League relegation this season.”

In contrast, Crystal Palace comes into this match with a more favorable outlook. They previously defeated Tottenham 1-0 at Selhurst Park, which adds to the psychological edge they may carry into this fixture. Additionally, Crystal Palace has lost only one of their last nine away London derby matches in the Premier League, showcasing their resilience in high-stakes encounters.

However, both teams will be missing key players. Crystal Palace will be without Maxence Lacroix, who is serving a one-game suspension, while Tottenham’s Cristian Romero is also suspended, completing the last match of a four-match ban. Furthermore, Tottenham’s Djed Spence is sidelined due to a minor calf injury, adding to their list of long-term absentees, which totals four players.

On the positive side for Tottenham, Brennan Johnson is expected to start against Crystal Palace, which could provide a much-needed boost to their attacking options. The match will also mark the eighth Premier League game played on a Thursday this season, a unique scheduling quirk that adds an interesting dynamic to the fixture.

As the match approaches, the stakes could not be higher for Tottenham. They are winless in their last 12 midweek Premier League games, and with the pressure mounting, they must find a way to turn their fortunes around. A draw has been suggested as a likely outcome, with odds of 5/2 reflecting the uncertainty surrounding both teams’ current form.

In summary, the Tottenham vs Crystal Palace match is set to be a pivotal encounter for both clubs. Tottenham must break their winless streak to avoid falling deeper into the relegation battle, while Crystal Palace will aim to capitalize on their rivals’ struggles. The outcome remains uncertain, and details remain unconfirmed as both teams prepare for this crucial London derby.
