Waitrose mackerel sales stopped

Waitrose has taken a significant step by becoming the first major UK supermarket to suspend mackerel sales due to sustainability concerns. This decision, effective from April 29, 2026, responds to alarming statistics about declining mackerel stocks.

The supermarket will remove fresh, chilled, and frozen mackerel from its shelves, with tinned varieties following once current stock is depleted. The move comes after scientists warned that mackerel catches needed to be reduced by 48% to ensure sustainable fishing practices.

Over the past decade, mackerel stocks in the North-east Atlantic have plummeted by 75%, largely attributed to overfishing. Jake Pickering of Waitrose stated, “By suspending sourcing of mackerel at Waitrose, we are reinforcing our ethical and sustainable business commitments, acting to tackle overfishing and protect the long-term health of our oceans and this crucial fish.”

This decision aligns with the Sustainable Seafood Coalition’s codes of conduct and has been welcomed by conservationists. Charles Clover from the Marine Conservation Charity remarked, “This crisis has been ignored for too long. We hope that this action by Waitrose sends it to the top of the political agenda.” The fishing industry faces increasing pressure as consumers demand more sustainable seafood options.

In response to the suspension, Waitrose plans to introduce MSC-certified frozen sardines as an eco-friendly alternative. Marija Rompani emphasized, “We believe sustainable food production must balance climate action; nature protection and responsible fish sourcing is fundamental to protecting our oceans.” However, there is currently no set timeframe for when Waitrose might resume sourcing mackerel.

As this situation unfolds, observers are closely watching how other supermarkets will respond. With rising awareness about overfishing and its impact on marine life, consumers may increasingly favor retailers that prioritize sustainability in their seafood supply chains.
