World book day: Celebrating Reading Across the UK

Celebrating Reading for Pleasure

“World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate reading at your local library,” said Councillor Ian Cresswell, highlighting the importance of community involvement in promoting literacy.

Scheduled for March 5, 2026, World Book Day aims to inspire a love of reading and spark imagination for children of all ages. This year, Radio 2 presenters will dress up as their favourite literary heroes, adding a festive touch to the celebrations.

In a significant initiative, the Premier League will distribute more than 120,000 free books to children across England and Wales. Alex White noted, “Since 2017 almost half a million children across England and Wales have received a free book thanks to Premier League Primary Stars and the National Literacy Trust,” showcasing the ongoing commitment to literacy.

World Book Day is not just about giving away books; it also champions reading for fun. Jim Sells emphasized, “World Book Day celebrates reading for pleasure for everyone, which is central to the National Literacy Trust’s mission.” This reflects the broader goal of making reading an enjoyable activity for all.

Local libraries are also getting involved in the celebrations. Worcestershire County Council’s libraries will host a variety of World Book Day themed activities. St John’s Library has been designated as an official voucher exchange hub for the event, allowing children to redeem their World Book Day vouchers for free books.

Additionally, Malvern Library will host a ‘Meet the Author’ event with Daisy Merle on March 4, a day before the main event. This provides an opportunity for young readers to engage directly with authors and foster a deeper connection to literature.

On March 5, Redditch & Woodrow Libraries will run a free Storytime and craft session, further encouraging children to explore the world of books through creative activities.

As World Book Day approaches, communities across the UK are gearing up to celebrate the joy of reading. With various events planned and initiatives underway, the day promises to be a vibrant celebration of literature and literacy.
