Barcelona’s Decision on Rashford
Barcelona is reportedly set to decline the opportunity to sign Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford for his £26m release fee. The clause is due to expire on Monday, June 15, following Rashford’s loan spell last season with the Spanish champions.
There has been no official communication between the clubs regarding the transfer. However, speculation has grown that Barcelona will not proceed with the permanent signing. The club has indicated that a decision will be made early next week.
Manchester United is awaiting confirmation on whether Barcelona intends to activate the £26m clause. Sources close to the player suggest that the deadline may pass without an agreement being reached.
Financial Considerations and Player Status
Barcelona has already completed the signing of Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon for £69.3m. This acquisition may influence their decision regarding Rashford, especially as Gordon is competing for an England starting position alongside Rashford at the World Cup.
Manchester United has consistently stated that they are unwilling to renegotiate the terms of the transfer. Rashford holds one of the most lucrative contracts at United, which is set to run until 2028. Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly looking to reduce the top-level salaries within the first-team squad.
Last summer, Rashford was part of the ‘bomb squad’ under former manager Ruben Amorim before his loan move to Barcelona. His relationship with Michael Carrick, a former teammate, coach, and interim manager, is considered to be significant. Carrick, who managed United for three games after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021, has a deep connection with Rashford, who is one of the club’s academy products and its 15th all-time highest goalscorer.
When asked about Rashford’s future in April, Carrick stated that no decision had been made, adding that he intended to work with and help improve any player at the club.
Potential Future Developments
Even if the June 15 deadline passes without a deal, there is still time for Rashford’s future to be resolved. He is entitled to three weeks of rest once England’s World Cup campaign concludes. If England were to exit the tournament in the quarter-finals, Rashford would not be due back at United’s Carrington training ground until the first week of August.
This timeline precedes a pre-season match against Paris St-Germain in Gothenburg on August 8, followed by a week-long training camp in the Republic of Ireland. This period offers an opportunity for his situation to be addressed, with some sources suggesting that a return to Barcelona on different terms is not out of the question.
In other transfer news, Manchester United is reportedly interested in Newcastle and England defender Lewis Hall, who is said to be seeking a move from St James’ Park. Additionally, Trabzonspor is attempting to secure a permanent transfer for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer.
Meanwhile, Barcelona will not match the financial offers made by Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid for Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva, whose contract at Manchester City is expiring. Real Madrid is reportedly in advanced discussions to sign Silva on a free transfer.
Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck, currently with Germany at the World Cup, is focusing on the tournament rather than a potential move to Real Madrid. Real Madrid is also looking to loan Argentinian forward Franco Mastantuono to Juventus. Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is attracting interest from AC Milan.
The deadline for Barcelona’s decision on Marcus Rashford’s transfer is June 15.
