World Cup 2026 Opening Ceremony in Toronto
The World Cup 2026 has commenced in Canada with an opening ceremony in Toronto featuring performances by Canadian music artists Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé. Fans gathered in red attire ahead of the first match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, with some participating in an impromptu rendition of the national anthem, O Canada, as they entered Toronto Stadium.
The tournament, co-hosted by three countries, is set to be the largest to date, with 48 nations competing. The opening ceremony in Mexico City on Thursday included performances by Shakira and Burna Boy, while the first US game in Los Angeles later on Friday will feature artists such as Katy Perry and Future.
Fans expressed excitement for the event. Peter Giacobbe, a Toronto native, mentioned attending Canada games in both Toronto and Vancouver with his friend Robert McIntosh, noting the historic nature of the occasion. Supporters of the Bosnian team also showed enthusiasm, with some travelling from their home country and others, like Bosnian-Canadian Layla Mesic, attending from closer to home. Mesic described the experience as a significant moment of pride.
Performers at Canada‘s opening ceremony included Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyes, Nora Fatehi, and indigenous artist William Prince. Organisers stated that the selection of performers was inspired by Canada‘s diverse communities. An announcer at Toronto Stadium also called for a round of applause for peace.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, some fans gathered at the Toronto Fan Zone due to the high cost of tickets for the actual game. Angela Aco, a Torontonian, found the fan zone to be a great experience, highlighting the diverse crowd and enjoying Michael Bublé‘s performance during the ceremony.

Match Action: Canada v Bosnia and Herzegovina
The World Cup Group B opener between co-hosts Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently underway. Early in the match, Bosnia took the lead with a goal from Jovo Lukic, his first in international football, following a corner that was flicked on and headed in from close range.
Canada has shown moments of offensive threat. Koné initiated an attack, finding Oluwaseyi, who crossed the ball into the box. Moments later, Jonathan David had an opportunity inside the area but his first-time effort was directed straight at Vasilj. Millar also delivered a pass to Jonathan David, whose shot was blocked.
The Canadian team has been active in Bosnia‘s half, with Oluwaseyi creating space inside the area, though his shot went high. Jonathan David also won a free-kick from the left after a foul by Muharemovic. Johnston and Memic have been engaged in a battle on Bosnia‘s left wing.
In the 53rd minute, Canada executed a one-touch play, leading to Laryea firing past the goalkeeper. However, Kolasinac made a defensive block, deflecting the ball off the crossbar. There was also a penalty shout after Oluwaseyi and Vasilj collided, but replays indicated the goalkeeper made contact with the ball first.
Later in the match, Koné drove through midfield, passing to Promise, who then set up Larin. Larin‘s deflected shot found its way past Vasilj, levelling the score for Canada. Substitutions were made, with Millar, Buchanan, and Jonathan David being replaced by Promise David, Shaffelburg, and Ahmed for Canada. Bosnia brought on Gigovic and Bazdar.
