Chelsea are reportedly in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward is understood to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal could be finalised. This potential transfer signals a shift in the club’s strategy, moving towards more experienced players.
Welbeck’s potential arrival aligns with Chelsea owner Behdad Eghbali‘s April statement about needing a “tweak” to their model of signing young players. Manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly seeking experienced players and strong personalities to address issues that contributed to the team’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Last season, Welbeck scored 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton, marking his best league return. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has accumulated 51 goals in 201 matches. He signed a 12-month contract extension in March, which is set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Strategic Shift at Chelsea
The pursuit of Welbeck represents a notable change in Chelsea’s transfer policy. The club has recently focused on acquiring younger players with potential. However, this summer has seen attempts to sign more established players, including 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland and interest in 31-year-old free agent John Stones.
The arrival of 23-year-old Morgan Rogers, a club-record £117m attacker, still fits the club’s preferred policy for younger talent, but he also brings significant Premier League experience. Chelsea are also expected to complete a £52m move for 26-year-old Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix to further bolster their squad with Premier League-ready experience.
Welbeck’s extensive experience, including over 400 Premier League appearances and spells at Arsenal and Manchester United, would mark a clear departure from the previous strategy of focusing solely on young, inexperienced players.
Impact on Current Forwards
A move for Welbeck could have implications for several current Chelsea forwards. There are already questions surrounding the futures of players like Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marc Guiu.
Jackson, who returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is reportedly open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa. Delap, who joined Chelsea a year ago in a £30m move from Ipswich, is increasingly expected to depart despite hoping to establish himself under Alonso.
Emegha’s future is also uncertain, even though he recently joined Chelsea from Strasbourg. Guiu is understood to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25m.
Welbeck’s arrival would add to Chelsea’s attacking options, despite the club not competing in European competition. He may be content to provide cover for Joao Pedro, who is considered the club’s first-choice option and impressed with 15 league goals in his debut campaign.
Welbeck’s ability to keep defenders engaged with off-the-ball runs and his shooting threat from outside the box are noted. His effective link-up play and success in quick pass-and-move sequences at Brighton, particularly when playing ahead of Joao Pedro, could be beneficial if he reunites with Pedro at Chelsea. Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler praised Welbeck’s leadership last season, highlighting his value as both a goalscorer and a leader on and off the pitch after Brighton’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in March.
