Paris Saint-Germain have formally withdrawn from the pursuit of RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, according to a statement from the Ligue 1 and European champions. This development has reportedly increased Real Madrid‘s confidence in securing the Ivory Coast international.
The statement from PSG indicated that the asking transfer fee and salary demands for Diomande were considered “completely disproportionate and distortive.” PSG stated it would not compromise its principles of rational financial management and squad balance.
Madrid’s pursuit of Diomande
Real Madrid is understood to be actively working to finalise a deal for Diomande. The Spanish giants have already agreed personal terms with the 19-year-old player. Previously, RB Leipzig rejected a bid for Diomande, with the German club seeking a higher amount for his transfer.
Diomande had reportedly shown a preference for joining PSG earlier in the summer and had agreed to a contract with them until 2031. However, PSG‘s recent withdrawal shifts the landscape of his potential move.
Other clubs have also shown interest in Diomande. Liverpool has expressed interest, while Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester City also remain keen on the forward.
Jose Mourinho‘s side has been active in the current transfer window, having acquired players such as Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Marc Cucurella.
Diomande’s impact and playing style
Diomande’s market value has reportedly increased significantly after just one season in the German league. Leipzig signed him for 20 million euros. His current market value is around 90 million euros, though his actual transfer fee could be higher.
The forward was a key player for the Ivory Coast national team at the 2026 World Cup, where he delivered performances that left a mark on the tournament. The Spanish newspaper “Marca” described him as “a devil who keeps his opponent constantly on edge.”
Diomande’s development included coming through the ranks with the Colorado Rapids in MLS before moving to Europe. He also played for Spanish side Leganes between January and June 2025. After his move to Leipzig, he became a standout star in the German league, playing a role in the club’s return to the Champions League.
He was recognised with the best rising player prize for the 2025-2026 season by the DFL, beating Hamburg‘s Luka Vuskovic and Bayer Leverkusen star Ibrahim Maza for the award.
Diomande primarily operates on the left wing, where he cuts in on his right foot. His individual skill makes him a constant threat in one-on-one situations. During the 2025-2026 season in the German league, he attempted more dribbles than any other player and had the highest success rate in individual duels, at a 55% success rate, according to “Marca”.
He is known for his ability to create numerical advantages near the opponent’s box and to pick out teammates, contributing to expected assists and key passes. He also poses a goal threat. While crossing is an area where he may fall short, his overall impact in carrying the ball forward and creating chances makes him an influential winger in attacking play.
His playing style is expected to suit the defensive demands of a coach like Jose Mourinho, given his contributions to pressing after losing the ball, a role in which he excelled under coach Ole Werner. Werner noted that Diomande’s distinguishing quality is his ability to keep opposing defences in a state of constant tension.
Meanwhile, Arsenal is reportedly exploring a potential deal for Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior, who is in the final year of his contract. If a new deal is not agreed, Real Madrid could consider selling him rather than losing him for free next summer. Julian Alvarez and Bradley Barcola are also among Arsenal‘s forward targets.
