Fire Near Glasgow Central Station Causes Major Disruption
“I am deeply concerned about the fire near Glasgow Central Station tonight and very grateful to all of the emergency services who are responding,” stated John Swinney, reflecting the urgency of the situation as a fire broke out near the station.
The incident, reported at approximately 3:46 PM on March 8, has led to significant rail disruptions, with dozens of trains cancelled due to the blaze originating from a vape shop on Union Street.
As emergency crews responded, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service mobilised 15 fire appliances and more than 60 firefighters to tackle the large building fire. The station has been closed until further notice, with no trains running to or from the high-level platforms.
Paul Sweeney, a local representative, remarked, “Sadly the building has now partially collapsed. I hope the fire can be contained.” The Forsyth Building, which dates back to 1851, has been a significant structure in the area, previously housing a department store before being repurposed into a mix of office and retail space.
According to a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, “More than 60 firefighters are currently working to tackle a large building fire on Union Street, Glasgow.” The fire has raised concerns not only for public safety but also for the historic building.
Avanti West Coast has advised customers, stating, “We’re strongly advising customers not to travel to or from Glasgow Central today, Sunday 8th March.” This precaution aims to ensure the safety of passengers and allow emergency services to operate effectively.
