Lando Norris secured his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, following an early contest with his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri. Norris’s win at the Hungaroring saw him finish ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli.
Norris, who started from pole position, initially lost the lead to Piastri during a competitive opening lap. Despite this, Norris demonstrated stronger pace, eventually reclaiming the lead after the second round of pit stops. Piastri, however, later retired from the race while running in second place due to a gearbox issue. This incident led to a late Virtual Safety Car (VSC) with 14 laps remaining.
Race Dynamics and Strategy
The race saw strategic decisions impacting several drivers. Ferrari opted to pit Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton, however, received a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane, which demoted him to fifth place behind his teammate Leclerc. Verstappen, who did not pit during this period, held onto second place after a strong final stint. Antonelli successfully defended his position against Hamilton on the track, extending his championship lead.
Piastri’s early lead was a result of a strong start, capitalising on Norris running wide at the second turn. Norris, despite having superior pace, found it challenging to overtake on the circuit. He expressed frustration over the radio, inquiring about pitting first before the second round of pit stops. McLaren ultimately pitted Piastri just before the halfway point of the 70-lap Hungarian Grand Prix, while Norris remained on track.
Norris’s ability to maintain pace on older tyres allowed him to slightly outpace Piastri, who encountered lapped traffic, including contact with Williams driver Carlos Sainz. Norris pitted on Lap 40, emerging ahead of Piastri, and subsequently dominated the rest of the race. Piastri’s retirement due to gearbox failure occurred when he was in second place.
Piastri later commented on his retirement, stating, “When It broke, I was just taking my normal line, so I am not sure [whether a kerb could have affected his gearbox]. It was definitely the highlight of my race [leading the race in Hungary] and it went pretty downhill from there so. There is a lot of things to unpack, I think firstly the pace on the hard tyres was just nowhere and then obviously getting taken out by a backmarker is never really one of the things you think can go wrong but I was proven wrong and then obviously the gearbox. Not the easiest of tests.” He also mentioned, “Being crashed into by Carlos [Sainz] and in the moment I was hoping they would not pit Lando [Norris] because of that incident to at least give me the chance to stay in the lead but I think that is not very reasonable so I was more just upset in the moment about what happened, I think my pit stop was fine, we wanted to beat Lewis and that is what we needed to do to do that.”
Post-Race Reactions and Future Outlook
Norris expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting, “My pace today was probably some of the best pace I’ve ever had. The car was beautiful to drive and I felt very confident, so a great race.” He added, “And to get it back in terms of going long, which is certainly not what I was expecting, but the pace was so good I could always extend the stints, and fresh tyres then always won me the race.”
Verstappen secured second place, while Antonelli finished third, extending his championship lead to 50 points over Hamilton and 59 points over George Russell, who recovered to seventh after a difficult start. Hamilton’s penalty ultimately placed him behind Leclerc, with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar finishing sixth. The Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad engaged in a race-long battle with Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg, with Lawson, Hulkenberg, and Lindblad securing the final points-paying positions.
The Formula 1 season will resume after the summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled from August 21-23.
