Liverpool secured a 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Andoni Iraola’s inaugural match as head coach, marking a successful start to their summer tour of the US. The pre-season fixture in Nashville saw goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, and Lewis Koumas. Despite the positive result, the match was overshadowed by an early injury to defender Joe Gomez.
Iraola, who took over from Arne Slot at Anfield in June, expressed satisfaction with aspects of his team’s performance, particularly a well-executed team move that led to the opening goal. The match, played in the Nashville heat, saw Liverpool improve significantly after the break, overcoming a 2-1 deficit.

Iraola described Gomez’s injury as “the worst news,” especially as the team had gone through training without losing any players. The situation highlights a potential need for defensive reinforcements for Liverpool, particularly at centre-back and right-back. Virgil van Dijk was also absent from the match, being on holiday after the World Cup.
