James joins 76ers
LeBron James has announced his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers for the upcoming NBA season. This move follows his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers last month, after spending eight years with the team. James, who is the highest points scorer in the history of the league, stated that this will be his final contract in the NBA.
The 41-year-old player expressed his enthusiasm for his new team, saying, "I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energise a new fanbase and start this incredible journey one last time." His decision concludes weeks of speculation regarding his next team, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Miami Heat also reportedly in contention for the four-time NBA champion.
James has a history of winning NBA titles with all three of his previous teams. He secured two championships with Miami, who recently posted a link to an ‘introductory press conference’ for James in error. A spokesperson for the Heat confirmed that the video was posted by staff preparing for the possibility of James rejoining the team he played for between 2010 and 2014.
Prior to and following his time with Miami, James had two stints with Cleveland, the team that drafted him in 2003. Cleveland is located near his hometown of Akron, Ohio. James led the Cavaliers to an NBA championship in 2016. He then joined the Lakers in 2018, where he won another NBA title two years later.
Motivation for continued play
James has been named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player four times, with all these accolades occurring between 2009 and 2013. He has also been an NBA All-Star for 22 consecutive seasons. Despite these achievements, James continues to be driven by the desire to compete and win. He previously indicated after last season that he was "pretty sure I [had] played my last game," but later realised he "still truly love[s] this game and I have more to give."
Regarding his motivations for continuing to play, James stated, "I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship."
Reports indicate that James has signed a two-year contract with the 76ers, which includes a player option for the second year. The contract is reportedly worth $8m (£6m). This contrasts with his average salary of $50.7m (£38m) with the Lakers last season.
The 76ers reached the Conference semi-finals in the play-offs last season, where they were defeated by the New York Knicks, who went on to become the eventual champions. Since then, the 76ers have acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in a trade that involved Paul George and some future draft picks.
James, who will turn 42 in December, is the oldest active player in the NBA. He is set to become the first player in the league’s history to play a 24th season. Last March, he surpassed Robert Parish’s record for the most career regular-season games played. He also earned a league-record 22nd consecutive All-Star selection last February.
During the season leading up to his departure from the Lakers, James maintained an elite level of performance, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists over 60 games. He announced his departure from the Lakers at the end of June, expressing his hope that he had made the fans and his teammates proud during his tenure.
Responding to a post from the Lakers’ official account thanking him for his service, James wrote on social media, "No, THANK YOU! Truly an honour to wear the (Lakers colours) while trying to continue the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint."
