Trent Bridge sees New Zealand clinch series against England in Ben Stokes’ final Test

New Zealand secure series victory

New Zealand claimed a 2-1 series victory against England, winning the third and deciding Test at Trent Bridge by 160 runs. This defeat marked the end of Ben Stokes‘ international career, concluding his 15-year tenure with England and a four-year captaincy reign.

The final day in Nottingham saw England, chasing 373 for victory, collapse to 212 all out. The result means New Zealand secured only their fourth series win in England, and their first series win of three or more Tests in the country in 14 years. The Black Caps were also the last visiting team to win a series in England, achieving this in 2021.

The match concluded with Jamie Smith being caught at long-off, sealing New Zealand’s triumph. This series victory for New Zealand comes despite the retirement of their own prominent player, Kane Williamson, after the first Test of the series.

England’s final day struggles

England’s pursuit of 373 began with an early setback on the final day. The fourth over saw Emilio Gay depart, followed by the crucial run-out of Joe Root by Henry Nicholls. This left England in a difficult position, with any hopes of a prolonged fight quickly diminishing.

Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson offered some resistance, forming a 75-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Smith achieved his second half-century in 11 months during this stand. However, Atkinson was dismissed just before lunch, and Josh Tongue fell victim to another direct hit, this time from Mitchell Santner, before Smith’s eventual dismissal.

The batting performance on Sunday evening was described as chaotic, with a desire to make an impact on the target. However, the approach on Monday was more orthodox, despite the earlier recklessness.

Stokes’ departure and England’s future

Ben Stokes final Test was not the fitting end many might have anticipated for a player known for his significant contributions and never-say-die attitude. His announcement on Sunday, prior to the final day’s play, was described as one of the most extraordinary days in English cricket history.

The defeat marks England’s seventh loss in nine Tests and extends a run without a series win since 2024. The team now faces the challenge of rebuilding after the Ashes, and without their captain and one of their most influential players.

The immediate future for England includes a white-ball series against India, scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Looking further ahead, England will need to appoint a new captain for their next Test against Pakistan in August, with names like Harry Brook and Joe Root being considered. The absence of Stokes’ all-round ability and leadership will require the team to find new ways to balance and inspire its players, particularly with the next Ashes series approximately a year away.

Jofra Archer was named England’s player of the series for his 11 wickets, despite missing the first Test. Daryl Mitchell was awarded player of the match for his century. New Zealand’s series victory is their second major away series win in the last two years, following a win against India in late 2024.
