Bruno Guimaraes’ Future at Newcastle United
Newcastle United is navigating a period of significant transfer activity, with questions surrounding the future of captain Bruno Guimaraes. While the club is keen to retain the midfielder, reports indicate that Guimaraes has expressed a desire to explore an opportunity with Arsenal if an acceptable offer is made. This interest from Guimaraes is reportedly driven by footballing ambitions rather than financial incentives, as he is already the highest earner at Newcastle.
Guimaraes, who will turn 29 later this year, is said to be seeking to win titles, a goal he reportedly believes may not be achievable at Newcastle in the immediate future. He also wants to ensure that Newcastle receives a substantial fee should he depart. The club’s valuation for Guimaraes is understood to be around £80m, an amount that would prompt them to consider a sale.
Despite the player’s reported interest, Arsenal has not yet made any direct contact with Newcastle regarding Guimaraes’ availability. Newcastle officials are reportedly surprised by the ongoing speculation, as all discussions have seemingly been conducted through agents rather than direct club-to-club communication. Until a concrete offer is presented, Newcastle maintains that Guimaraes is not for sale and they are determined to keep him.
The situation with Guimaraes comes as Newcastle has already seen the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to Barcelona and Tottenham, respectively. The club is anticipating a summer of considerable change, with as many as eight to ten squad positions potentially affected.
Other Transfer Activities and Club Strategy
In other transfer news, Newcastle had reached a verbal agreement to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for £49m. A delegation from Newcastle traveled to Germany to finalize the deal, and Manzambi verbally agreed to personal terms. However, while Manzambi was still competing in the World Cup for Switzerland, Aston Villa reportedly intervened. Villa matched Newcastle’s agreed £49m offer, and Manzambi’s preference is understood to be a move to Villa, reportedly influenced by the prospect of Champions League football.
Newcastle is also looking to make several other signings, with expectations of bringing in three or four more players. This includes a potential new midfielder, particularly if Guimaraes were to leave. The club is also seeking a new number one goalkeeper, with James Trafford of Manchester City being a long-standing target. Additionally, a full-back, preferably a left-back, is on their radar, and they might consider a winger if Jacob Murphy departs. A new striker could also be sought if either Nick Woltemade or Yoane Wissa leaves.
The club’s transfer policy is shifting towards acquiring younger players, generally between the ages of 18 and 24, with price tags typically ranging from £20m to £40m. While they are willing to slightly exceed this range for specific targets, such as Manzambi, they are not expected to spend significantly higher amounts on individual players. This approach aims to bring in younger talent with high potential that manager Eddie Howe can develop.
Squad Revamp and Managerial Outlook
Several players could also be on their way out of St James’ Park. Goalkeeper Nick Pope is expected to leave, although interest from Ipswich has reportedly waned. There is also a possibility that Murphy and Joe Willock could depart. Newcastle would be content to see these players move on to facilitate a squad revamp, and their departures would necessitate replacements.
Manager Eddie Howe is reportedly aligned with this new transfer strategy, working closely with sporting director Ross Wilson and chief executive David Hopkinson. Howe views this approach as an opportunity to develop younger players, such as Sean Steur, Bazo Toure, and Manzambi. Steur, an 18-year-old signing, is seen as a future prospect who will train with the first team but is expected to start as a substitute, benefiting from the lack of European football next season which allows for more training time.
The club’s ownership, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), remains committed to Newcastle. This commitment provides assurance as the club undergoes its significant squad transformation ahead of the new season.

The current transfer window is expected to be a busy one for Newcastle United as they prepare for the upcoming season.
