Nicky Henderson Celebrates Another Cheltenham Festival Win

Nicky Henderson’s Success at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival

The 2026 Cheltenham Festival commenced on March 10, 2026, with an expected attendance of about a quarter of a million people. The opening race, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, is a prestigious Grade One event over a distance of 2 miles and 87 yards, setting the tone for the four-day festival.

In a remarkable display, Nicky Henderson’s Old Park Star emerged victorious in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, marking Henderson’s sixth win in this opening race at the festival. Ridden by Nico de Boinville, Old Park Star was the 15-8 market leader and won the race by a length and a half over Sober Glory, with Mydaddypaddy finishing third just a nose behind.

This victory is particularly significant for Henderson, who expressed optimism for Old Park Star’s future following the retirement of his previous star, Constitution Hill. “On a day we’ve said goodbye to Constitution Hill (over jumps), it’s nice to come straight in and bring on a new one we hope could be a star,” Henderson remarked.

The top four finishers in the race were all trained in Britain, showcasing the strength of British horse racing. Henderson’s long association with the Cheltenham Festival has seen him achieve multiple victories since 1986, reinforcing his status as one of the leading trainers in the sport.

Joint-trainer Johnson White, who finished second with Sober Glory, expressed his disappointment but acknowledged the quality of the race. “I couldn’t be more delighted with the run, obviously very disappointed to finish second,” he stated.

Dan Skelton, trainer of the third-place Mydaddypaddy, praised the performance of his horse, saying, “It was an almighty run from a five-year-old, I couldn’t be prouder of the horse.” This sentiment reflects the competitive spirit and high standards present at the Cheltenham Festival.

Nicky Henderson’s continued success at this prestigious event not only highlights his training prowess but also sets the stage for future competitions, as he aims to develop new talents in the wake of his established champions.

As the festival progresses, all eyes will be on Henderson and his team to see how Old Park Star and other competitors perform in the upcoming races, further shaping the narrative of this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
