Rangers are set to engage in discussions with Hearts manager Derek McInnes regarding the managerial position, as current boss Danny Röhl is reportedly close to joining RB Salzburg. The Glasgow club has made a formal approach to Hearts to speak with McInnes.
Röhl, who joined Rangers last October, is understood to be nearing a move to RB Salzburg, with talks ongoing between Rangers and the Austrian club. There is a growing belief in Glasgow that Röhl will accept Salzburg’s offer, with a switch potentially occurring within days. RB Salzburg is reportedly keen to appoint Röhl as Daniel Beichler’s replacement.
One report indicates that a personal intervention from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, now head of global soccer for Red Bull, has positioned Röhl as a leading candidate for RB Salzburg. Röhl has two years remaining on his contract at Ibrox, and any potential deal would need to meet Rangers’ terms.
McInnes’s Potential Return to Ibrox
In the event of Röhl’s departure, Rangers are expected to turn their attention to McInnes. The Hearts manager previously declined the opportunity to manage Rangers in 2017. However, it would be unexpected if he were to decline a second approach.
McInnes guided Hearts to a second-place finish in the Scottish Premiership in his first season at Tynecastle. The Edinburgh club narrowly missed out on the league title to Celtic on the final day of the campaign after a defeat at Celtic Park. McInnes was also named Scotland’s manager of the year.
McInnes is currently travelling to Boston for Scotland’s World Cup opener against Haiti. Rangers chairman Andrew Cavanagh and chief executive Jim Gillespie will also be present at the match. Hearts chief executive Andrew McKinlay is also attending as part of a Scottish FA delegation.

Röhl’s Coaching Journey and Rangers Tenure
Danny Röhl’s coaching career began at RB Leipzig, where he advanced to assist Ralph Hasenhuttl before moving with him to Southampton in 2018. He then served as assistant manager to Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich in 2019, contributing to the club’s Bundesliga and Champions League victories in 2020.
His first managerial role was in October 2023, when he took charge of Sheffield Wednesday. He successfully guided the team to Championship safety after inheriting a side that had secured only two points from their initial 10 games. In his second season, he led them to 12th place before his departure.
Röhl moved to Ibrox last October, taking over when the team was sixth in the league. He guided them into the title race before they ultimately finished third in the Scottish Premiership. Under his leadership, Rangers were eliminated from the Scottish Cup at the quarter-final stage and the League Cup semi-finals.

Club Rebuild and Recent Signings
Rangers have already initiated a club-led summer rebuild, with new CEO Jim Gillespie, executive director Fraser Thornton, technical director Dan Purdy, and consultant Stig Inge Bjørnebye collaborating with the coaching staff to strengthen the squad.
Scotland international Lawrence Shankland was the first confirmed signing, joining from Hearts on a two-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months. He moved from Tynecastle to Ibrox for free after activating a clause in his contract, having scored 20 goals across all competitions last season.
The Rangers players are scheduled to return for pre-season training next week.
