Southend United appoints Kieron Dyer as new head coach

Dyer takes on new challenge at Southend

Kieron Dyer has been appointed as the new head coach of Southend United, marking his first venture into a lead role in the dugout. His appointment follows his departure from Chesterfield FC, where he served as first-team coach for three seasons. Dyer has signed an initial two-year deal with the National League club, succeeding Kevin Maher.

Dyer expressed his pride and privilege in taking on the role, stating that Southend is the biggest club in the National League and deserves to be in the Football League. He conveyed his excitement to begin and his hope of guiding the club back into the Football League. Dyer also outlined his philosophy, emphasising a desire for his team to dominate possession and play with high intensity, which he described as a non-negotiable aspect of his approach.

He indicated that his time absorbing knowledge from various top managers has shaped his ideas, which he intends to apply to his coaching philosophy. Dyer also sent a message to the supporters, promising to do everything possible for success and encouraging them to enjoy the journey and the football presented on the pitch. He stated that the team would fear no one in the league.

Dyer’s journey from player to coach

Dyer’s playing career included spells with Newcastle United and Middlesbrough. He played alongside Hartlepool United head coach Lee Clark in three Premier League fixtures during Clark’s second stint with his boyhood club in 2005. Dyer initially broke into Newcastle’s first-team setup approximately 15 years prior to that.

After leaving Newcastle in August 2007, Dyer spent time with West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers. He then returned to the North East, joining Middlesbrough on the final day of the January 2013 transfer window. During his time at Middlesbrough, Dyer scored two goals in nine appearances before announcing his retirement at the end of that season.

Following his playing career, Dyer transitioned into coaching within the academy system at his former club, Ipswich Town. He then gained experience as a first-team coach with League Two side Chesterfield in recent seasons before taking on his current head coach position.

Impact at Chesterfield and personal resilience

During his tenure at Chesterfield, Dyer played a significant role in the club’s promotion back into the EFL. Ash Kirk, Chairman of Chesterfield, acknowledged Dyer’s impact, noting his enthusiasm, professionalism, and genuine love for the game, which were evident daily on the training ground. Kirk highlighted that Dyer joined the Spireites at a pivotal moment in the club’s journey.

Kirk also spoke about Dyer’s personal journey while with the club, specifically mentioning his battle with serious illness and undergoing a liver transplant in October 2023. Despite this, Dyer’s courage and determination remained steadfast, and he returned to the touchline in November 2023 with the same energy and commitment that inspired both players and staff. The chairman concluded that this experience speaks volumes about Dyer’s character.

Dyer’s appointment at Southend United marks a new chapter in his coaching career, following his contributions at Chesterfield FC.
