The WhatsOnStage Awards 2026, held at The London Palladium on March 8, marked a pivotal moment in the theatre scene, particularly for Paddington The Musical. Prior to this event, expectations were high for various productions, but few anticipated the record-breaking success that Paddington would achieve.
Paddington The Musical won nine awards, making it the first new West End musical to achieve such a feat. This remarkable accomplishment has positioned it among the three most awarded shows in the history of the WhatsOnStage ceremony. In contrast, Evita, another strong contender, secured five awards, showcasing the competitive nature of this year’s nominations.
In addition to Paddington’s triumph, notable performances were recognized, including Rachel Zegler, who won Best Performer in a Musical for her role in Evita, and Jonathan Bailey, awarded Best Performer in a Play for his portrayal in Richard II. These wins reflect the diverse talent showcased at the ceremony.
Les Misérables, celebrating its 40th anniversary, won the award for Best West End Show, further solidifying its status in the theatre community. Meanwhile, The Comedy About Spies was awarded Best New Play, highlighting the emergence of fresh narratives in the West End.
The awards ceremony was co-produced by Alex Parker and Damian Sandys and featured exclusive live performances from top stage talent, supported by a 24-piece orchestra, enriching the overall experience for attendees.
Among other notable recognitions, Amber Davies won Best Supporting Performer in a Musical for her role in The Great Gatsby, while Stephen Fry took home the award for Best Supporting Performer in a Play for The Importance of Being Earnest. Emma Kingston was acknowledged for her performance in Wicked, winning Best Takeover Performance.
The inaugural Best Child Performance category was also introduced, with Platon Filatov, Darcy Tosun, Anton Vehring, and Artie Wilkinson-Hunt winning for their roles in The Land of the Living. This addition reflects a growing recognition of young talent in the industry.
Critics have praised Paddington The Musical, with Arifa Akbar stating, “This is the new Mary Poppins: a well-known story imaginatively staged, immaculately performed and utterly winning.” Darius Thompson and Alex Wood noted, “The voters really did look after that Bear. Paddington’s record-setting awards haul has firmly cemented it as a fan-favourite new addition to the West End.”
