At the races: King Charles II : A Historic Event at Berkeley Castle

King Charles II at the Races

King Charles II is set to visit Berkeley Castle for a remarkable day at the races from April 4 to 6, 2026. This event not only promises thrilling horse racing but also recreates a pivotal moment in English history, bringing the ‘Merry Monarch’ back to life.

Tickets for the event are priced at £17 for adults and £9 for children aged three and up, while children under three can attend for free. Family tickets for two adults and two children are available for £48, making it an accessible outing for families.

The highlight of the event will be the Cheltenham Festival, featuring the prestigious Unibet Champion Hurdle. Among the competitors, Brighterdaysahead stands out with a rating of 160, making her the best horse in the race by a narrow margin of 1lb over her closest rival, The New Lion, who has a rating of 159.

Golden Ace, the previous year’s Champion Hurdle winner, will also compete, adding to the excitement and competition of the event. As horse racing enthusiasts gather, the stakes are high, and the atmosphere is expected to be electric.

Matt Chapman, a well-known racing analyst, remarked, “I ended up tipping Brighterdaysahead. The reason I changed my mind is she’s, by 1lb, officially the best horse in the race with a mark of 160.” This endorsement adds to the anticipation surrounding her performance.

However, not all insights are positive. Jockey Paddy Brennan noted, “I see Brighterdaysahead is going to be stabled at Olly Murphy’s yard. Obviously they’re trying something different, but if you’re looking for cheekpieces for Lossiemouth and a stable in Olly Murphy’s for Brighterdaysahead … they’re not positives.” This comment raises questions about the horse’s preparation.

This immersive event puts visitors at the heart of the action, as King Charles II’s presence will be celebrated with a military parade featuring marching soldiers and musket fire in his honour. The combination of history and sport is expected to attract a large crowd.

As the date approaches, excitement builds, but details remain unconfirmed regarding the final line-up of horses and any additional events that may be included in the schedule.

With the rich history of Berkeley Castle and the allure of horse racing, this event is poised to be a memorable occasion for all attendees.
