Uruguay’s World Cup Campaign Concludes
Marcelo Bielsa has stated that he has not contributed anything significant to Uruguayan football following the team’s elimination from the World Cup group stage. Uruguay failed to secure a victory in a group that included Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. Their exit was confirmed after a 1-0 defeat against Spain in Guadalajara.
During the match against Spain, goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was substituted at half-time after an error led to Spain’s only goal. Bielsa, who took charge in 2023, described his relationship with the players as poor and referred to himself as “toxic.” He will not continue in his role as manager.
Uruguay’s campaign saw them draw 1-1 with Saudi Arabia and 2-2 with Cape Verde. Heading into their final group game, they needed a point from Spain but managed only one shot on target by the 83rd minute. The defeat extended Uruguay’s winless streak to seven games, which included a significant loss to the United States.
Bielsa commented on the team’s performance, saying, “I have not left anything to Uruguayan football. A coach who has been in a country for three years and not got results cannot say he has made a contribution.” He added that fourth place in the qualifiers and third at the Copa América held no value, and the team’s World Cup performance did not require further definition.
He acknowledged his responsibility for the team’s outcome. “This is the result of my management. It was my job to manage a group of players that I did not manage to turn into a force.” Bielsa also mentioned that Muslera requested to be taken off, and he substituted Fede Valverde to strengthen the attack, a decision that led to Valverde’s angry departure.

Managerial Decisions and Player Reactions
The decision to remove Federico Valverde less than an hour into the game against Spain was noted, especially considering Manuel Ugarte had already been substituted due to injury. Valverde, who is accustomed to playing against Spanish players regularly, is a key figure for Uruguay, and his substitution was seen as a bold move while the team was chasing a result.
Despite the intention to change the midfield dynamics, the team appeared disjointed throughout the match, registering only one shot on target. The game concluded with Agustin Canobbio receiving a red card for a reckless challenge, followed by commotion on the touchline.
Reports of disagreements between the players and Bielsa had emerged prior to the tournament, contributing to what was described as a lacklustre response from the team. Bielsa’s tenure with Uruguay concludes without a strong World Cup legacy, contrasting with some of his achievements at club level.
His previous World Cup experience includes leading Argentina in 2002, where the team did not advance past the group stage. In 2010, he guided Chile out of their group before they were eliminated in the next round by Brazil. This round of 16 exit from 16 years ago remains the furthest Bielsa has progressed in a World Cup.
At 70 years old, and with his departure from the Uruguayan national team, it is suggested that Bielsa may not manage at a World Cup again. While he is revered by many for his tactical approach, his impact on the World Cup stage has been limited.

Spain’s Concerns Despite Victory
While Spain celebrated securing first place in their group, their joy was tempered by potential injuries to key players. Yéremy Pino is expected to miss the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a suspected broken collar bone, and there are concerns regarding the fitness of Nico Williams, who left the stadium limping.
Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s coach, expressed the team’s distress over Pino’s injury. The team’s qualification in first place was a positive outcome, but the injuries cast a shadow over their immediate future in the tournament. Uruguay’s run of seven games without a win includes the 1-0 defeat to Spain.
