What Happened
ENGIE has officially launched its Assú Sol photovoltaic complex, marking the company’s largest operational solar asset globally. The complex, located in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, received final approval from local authorities on February 13, 2026, after its construction was completed in December 2025. The project represents an investment of BRL 3.3 billion and has an installed capacity of 895 MWp, spanning 2,344 hectares and comprising 16 solar plants.
Why It Matters
The Assú Sol complex is significant not only for ENGIE but also for Brazil’s renewable energy landscape. With the capacity to generate enough electricity to meet the annual demand of approximately 850,000 people, it contributes to Brazil’s growing solar energy sector, which added 7.4 GW of new large-scale electricity generation capacity in 2025. This project aligns with Brazil’s ambitious goals for renewable energy, as the country aims for a 23.4% increase in renewable capacity in 2026.
What’s Next
As ENGIE continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, the successful operation of Assú Sol may pave the way for further investments in solar energy projects in Brazil and beyond. The company’s strategic focus on renewable assets is expected to enhance its position in the global energy market, particularly as countries strive to meet carbon neutrality targets.
