Haifa Faces Iranian Missile Attack Amid Ongoing Conflict

Reaction from the field

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Haifa, Israel, was struck by Iranian ballistic missiles, targeting the Bazan Group refinery complex, the largest oil refining facility in the country. This attack, which occurred on March 7, has resulted in fires and power outages across the Krayot suburbs, raising alarms about the safety and security of local residents.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the missile strike, framing it as retaliation for recent US-Israeli military actions against Iranian oil facilities in Tehran. This cycle of violence has intensified, with Iran reportedly firing a total of 300 missiles at Israel by the tenth day of the ongoing conflict, nearly half of which were equipped with cluster submunitions. The Bazan Group has been a recurring target throughout this conflict, underscoring the strategic importance of energy resources in the region.

As the missiles struck, they created multiple impact sites within Haifa, leading to localized damage to the northern power grid. Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen assured the public that the damage was not significant, stating, “The damage to the northern power grid was localized and not significant.” However, the situation remains precarious as the Bazan refinery is responsible for supplying approximately 65% of Israel’s diesel fuel, 59% of its gasoline, and 52% of its kerosene in 2024.

In response to the missile strike, fifteen firefighting teams were dispatched to the Bazan facilities to extinguish the fires and assess any hazardous materials. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in the Haifa area following the attack, and no hazardous substance leaks were detected, providing some relief to the community amid the chaos.

The missile attack has had immediate economic repercussions, with Bazan’s stock experiencing a 6.5% drop, while shares of Petrochemicals Ltd. fell by 10%. This reflects the broader impact of the conflict on Israel’s economy and the vital energy sector, which is already under strain due to ongoing hostilities.

Chaim Rafalowski, an expert on military strategy, explained the implications of such attacks, noting, “Each missile creates numerous simultaneous emergencies rather than a single blast site.” This highlights the challenges faced by emergency services in responding to multiple incidents arising from a single attack.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of the damage to the Bazan refinery complex and whether the reported impacts in the Krayot suburbs were due to direct missile hits or falling fragments from interception efforts. As the situation develops, the community remains on edge, grappling with the realities of living in a conflict zone.
