JP McManus’s Horse Withdrawn from Ryanair Chase

JP McManus’s horse, Fact To File, was withdrawn from the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival due to unfavorable ground conditions. This decision has significant implications, as Fact To File was the odds-on favorite for the race, having excelled in the same event the previous year.

The ground was officially described as good, good to soft in places, which led to frustration from trainer Willie Mullins. He expressed his concerns regarding the track conditions, stating, “These horses are too hard to find, too hard to get. In jump racing we want to have soft in the description of the ground.” Mullins had anticipated better conditions, having been promised watering of the course that he felt was not adequately executed.

Mullins further elaborated on the situation, saying, “We waited and waited for the rain that was half-promised, it hasn’t come so we made the decision not to run.” His observations were corroborated by his own experience walking the track, where he noted, “I said, ‘wow, this ground is going to be too good for her,’ sure enough, she wasn’t able to act on it.”

Fact To File had previously won the Ryanair Chase by a commanding nine lengths, showcasing its capability on softer ground. The horse’s withdrawal opened the door for Heart Wood, who ultimately won the race.

JP McManus also shared his sentiments regarding the ground conditions, stating, “I found it, too much for him, I was a bit, part of the course, altogether, not to my liking.” This reflects a broader concern in the racing community about the impact of ground conditions on performance.

The scheduled race time for the Ryanair Chase was set for 4:00pm GMT, but the absence of Fact To File altered the dynamics of the competition significantly. The two-mile race, which includes a distance of four and a half furlongs, is a key event in the jump racing calendar.

As the racing community processes this unexpected turn of events, further developments regarding the conditions at Cheltenham and the implications for future races are anticipated. Details remain unconfirmed.
