Kneecap Rapper Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh Cleared of Terrorism Charges

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, a 28-year-old rapper associated with the group Kneecap, will not face terrorism charges after the high court in London upheld a decision to dismiss the case against him. The ruling was made on March 11, 2026, following a previous dismissal in September 2025 due to a filing error by the prosecution.

Ó hAnnaidh had been charged for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag during a performance in November 2024. However, the chief magistrate ruled that the case was improperly filed, and the high court judges confirmed that he had no jurisdiction to try the case.

The high court’s decision was based on the finding that the prosecution had not sought the necessary permission from the Attorney General within the required timeframe, rendering the charge unlawful. This ruling was delivered by Lord Justice Edis and Justice Linden.

Kneecap celebrated the legal victory on social media, stating, “Get in!!!!!! Kneecap: 3 Brit Govt: 0.” The group has been known for its lyrics that criticize UK government policies regarding Gaza and advocate for the Irish language.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) acknowledged the high court’s judgment and indicated that they would update their processes to prevent similar issues in the future. The case has been described as a failure of the police and CPS to act diligently under terrorism legislation.

Ó hAnnaidh expressed his views on the case, stating, “This entire process was never about me, never about any threat to the public and never about terrorism… it was always about Palestine.” His solicitor, Darragh Mackin, remarked, “The rule of law cannot be clearer. The prosecution of Mo Chara was unlawful from its very inception.”

The case has drawn attention to the broader implications of prosecuting individuals under terrorism laws, particularly concerning free speech. It highlights ongoing tensions related to political expression and the legal boundaries surrounding it.

As the situation develops, further reactions from legal experts and political commentators are anticipated. The implications of this ruling may resonate beyond this case, influencing future prosecutions under similar circumstances.
