Marks & Spencer (M&S) has confirmed the impending closure of its Swansea city centre store, a long-standing fixture on Oxford Street, due to a sustained decline in sales over the past decade. The closure is part of a UK-wide programme aimed at ensuring stores are optimally located to enhance customer shopping experiences. Although no specific closing date has been announced, the store is expected to shut its doors in late 2026.
Why It Matters
The decision affects approximately 92 employees, all of whom were informed of the closure on February 24. M&S regional manager Richard Owen stated that changing customer shopping habits and operational challenges requiring significant investment have rendered the Swansea store unviable. The local council, led by Cllr Rob Stewart, expressed disappointment, noting that efforts had been made to prevent the store’s inclusion in previous closure rounds.
