Midfield Reinforcements and Transfer Strategy
Manchester United are actively working on their second deal of the summer transfer window, continuing their midfield restructuring. The club has already reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Ederson, who was initially expected to feature in pre-season but received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad. Ederson is now scheduled to complete his transfer after the tournament concludes.
The club is also pursuing Mateus Fernandes of West Ham. While United have not yet submitted a formal bid, the new financial year, commencing on July 1, is anticipated to accelerate transfer market activity. West Ham reportedly value Fernandes at £85m. Reports suggest Tottenham are prepared to meet this valuation, potentially including around £20m in add-ons, which would represent a record outlay for the North London club. Tottenham’s interest in Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali could also be a factor in their transfer strategy.
Talks between United and Fernandes’ representatives have progressed positively, with the player reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford. However, United are reportedly unwilling to meet West Ham’s £85m asking price, which has opened the door for Tottenham. If both clubs offer similar financial packages, the final decision is expected to rest with Fernandes. Tottenham can offer higher wages, but United can provide Champions League football, having finished third in the Premier League last season, compared to Tottenham’s 17th-place finishes in successive seasons.
The club’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has reportedly issued a directive to avoid overpaying for new signings. This approach follows past transfers, such as the acquisition of Casemiro for £60m plus add-ons in 2022, which saw the midfielder, then 30, sign a four-year contract. This philosophy has influenced United’s stance on various targets, including Elliot Anderson, for whom Manchester City’s £120m offer to Nottingham Forest was reportedly viewed as excessive by the United hierarchy.
This financial constraint is leading United to consider alternative midfield options. Alex Scott of Bournemouth is one such player, though Bournemouth currently maintains he is not available for transfer, with manager Marco Rose considering him a key player. Should Scott push for an exit, his reported £70m price tag could be further inflated by interest from Arsenal. Another target, Carlos Baleba of Brighton, was reportedly valued at £100m last summer, and Brighton is known for its firm negotiating stance in player sales.
Consequently, United may need to either exceed their desired spending limits for top-tier targets or consider players in a lower price bracket. James Garner, who previously came through the Red Devils’ academy before being sold to Everton for £9m, is being considered. Garner, 25, signed a new four-year contract in January and is valued at €45m (£39m) by Transfermarkt. However, due to current midfield transfer inflation, United could expect to pay around £60m for him.
Striker Search and Player Exits
Manchester United are also exploring options for a new striker to alleviate the pressure on Benjamin Sesko. The club aims to secure an experienced forward if a suitable deal can be arranged. Danny Welbeck has been considered in the past for this role. Last summer, United successfully signed Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig despite a slightly higher offer from Newcastle, as Sesko reportedly preferred a move to Old Trafford.
On the left side of the squad, United are looking to sign either a left forward or a left-back, but not both. West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville is being monitored and is on the club’s shortlist of data-approved targets for the left wing position. While West Ham states they are not compelled to sell their key players, they are seen as attainable by Premier League clubs.
Regarding potential departures, Manuel Ugarte is a candidate for an exit, which could help offset the cost of new signings. Ugarte recently sustained an injury during Uruguay’s match against Spain, and the impact of this injury on his potential move is yet to be determined. Additionally, United goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly close to securing another loan move to Trabzonspor. However, the club will not engage with Barcelona regarding another loan deal for Marcus Rashford. Rashford, a United academy graduate, is currently representing England at the World Cup and is expected to report for pre-season after a break following the tournament.
