Medway Tunnel Closure Causes Traffic Disruption

“The tunnel was closed following a power failure overnight and we apologise for the inconvenience,” stated Medway Council, highlighting the unexpected disruption faced by local commuters.

The Medway Tunnel, a crucial route for traffic bypassing urban links, was shut in both directions due to a power failure that occurred overnight. This closure has significantly impacted the stretch between Anthonys Way at Medway City Estate and Maritime Way at Chatham Docks.

As a result of the tunnel’s closure, heavy congestion has been reported on surrounding approaches. Drivers have been urged to use alternative routes and allow extra travel time, as traffic has backed up to Higham and Chattenden around the Wainscott Bypass.

Congestion has also been noted on Frindsbury Road into Strood, Pier Road through Gillingham, and Dock Road into Chatham. The Rochester Bridge is currently carrying heavier traffic than usual as drivers seek alternatives to navigate the area.

This disruption has been compounded by delays caused by a nearby building fire on Strood High Street, which has further strained local traffic conditions.

Emergency crews responded to the café fire, with seven fire engines on the scene for approximately four hours, adding to the challenges faced by drivers in the area.

Local authorities are working diligently to manage the situation, but drivers should assume that alternative routes will be slower until the tunnel is reopened.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline for repairs and the reopening of the Medway Tunnel, but updates are expected as the situation develops.
