Mr Benn Live-Action Film Adaptation Announced

The numbers

Mr Benn, the beloved character created by David McKee in 1967, is set to make a grand return as a live-action film adaptation directed by Kirk Jones. Filming is expected to commence in early 2027, bringing this cherished figure back to life for a new generation of fans.

The original Mr Benn series consisted of four enchanting books: Red Knight, Gladiator, Pirate, and Zoo Keeper. Following their success, the character was adapted into an animated series that aired on the BBC from 1971 to 1972, producing a total of only 13 episodes. These stories have always been imbued with moral lessons, making them a staple in children’s literature.

Kirk Jones, known for his work on family favorites like Nanny McPhee and Waking Ned Devine, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I adored Mr Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation, in a live action adventure.” He further elaborated on the character’s unique ability to travel through time and space, visiting various worlds to tackle monumental problems with kindness and common sense.

The McKee family, who have been closely involved with the character’s legacy, shared their excitement about the film adaptation. They noted, “The Mr Benn film project has been close to our hearts for many years; it was something our father would often talk about and was keen to see happen.” This sentiment underscores the deep connection the family has with the character and their hopes for his revival.

In addition to the original four books, David McKee published a fifth Mr Benn book in 2001, further expanding the character’s universe. Sadly, McKee passed away in 2022, leaving behind a rich legacy that the film aims to honor while introducing Mr Benn’s adventures to a fresh audience.

As the film progresses, observers are hopeful that it will capture the essence of Mr Benn’s adventures, which often blend fantasy with valuable life lessons. Kirk Jones hinted at the potential impact of the film, saying, “If all goes to plan, Mr Benn might even save the world.” This playful remark reflects the character’s enduring charm and the positive messages he embodies.

With the anticipation building around this adaptation, fans of all ages are eager to see how Mr Benn’s timeless stories will translate to the big screen. Details remain unconfirmed, but the excitement surrounding this project promises to rekindle the magic of Mr Benn for both longtime admirers and newcomers alike.
