Severe Weather Alert: New York Snow Causes Blizzard Warnings and Travel Bans

What Happened

A blizzard warning is currently in effect for all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and much of New Jersey as a classic nor’easter impacts the region with strong winds and heavy snowfall. Reports indicate that New York City could receive between 12 to 18 inches of snow, with some areas on Long Island experiencing up to two feet. The storm has prompted states of emergency in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

Why It Matters

The National Weather Service has defined blizzard conditions as sustained winds of 35 mph or more, combined with visibility of a quarter mile or less due to blowing snow, persisting for at least three hours. These conditions create dangerous whiteout scenarios, making travel perilous. In response, New York City has issued a travel ban on non-emergency vehicles, effective until noon on Monday, and schools will observe a snow day on Monday, with students expected to return on Tuesday.

What’s Next

Public transportation has been severely affected, with the Long Island Rail Road suspending service and NJ Transit halting bus, rail, and light rail operations. As the storm continues, officials are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as conditions evolve.
