Contaminated Wipes Linked to Burkholderia Stabilis Outbreak in the UK
Four brands of non-sterile wet wipes have been found contaminated with Burkholderia stabilis, leading to significant health concerns in the United Kingdom. This contamination has been linked to 59 confirmed cases of infections between June 2018 and February 2026, with six deaths reported as a result of the outbreak.
The contaminated wipes include ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free, Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, and Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued warnings about these products, advising the public to avoid their use.
Symptoms of a Burkholderia stabilis infection can manifest as redness, swelling, increased pain, warmth around a wound, and pus. Infections typically occur through contact with contaminated products on broken or damaged skin, raising alarms about the safety of using non-sterile alcohol-free wipes for first aid purposes.
The UKHSA uncovered the link to this outbreak through testing of wipes used by those affected. Following these findings, the contaminated wipes were withdrawn from sale in July 2025, but concerns remain regarding the safety of similar products still on the market.
Health experts, including Dr. James Elston, have emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding these products. He stated, “We are reminding the public not to use, and to dispose of, certain non-sterile alcohol-free wipes which have been linked to an outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis.” This warning highlights the potential risks associated with using contaminated wipes.
As investigations continue, the UKHSA is monitoring the situation closely to prevent further infections. The agency’s proactive measures aim to ensure that consumers are informed and protected from potential health hazards.
