Anthony russell huntley: Breaking News: Charged with Murder

Breaking Development

Anthony Russell Huntley, 43, has been charged with the murder of Ian Huntley at HMP Frankland, County Durham. The incident occurred on February 26, 2026, when Huntley was attacked with a metal bar while working in a prison workshop.

Immediate Circumstances

Huntley, who was serving a life sentence for the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. He was removed from life support on March 6, 2026, following a deterioration in his condition.

Ian Huntley, aged 52, was convicted in 2002 for the high-profile murders of 10-year-old Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. His life sentence was a result of a brutal crime that shocked the nation. Anthony Russell, on the other hand, was imprisoned in 2022 after a seven-day killing spree that left three people dead, including David and Julie Williams, as well as Nicole McGregor.

Russell’s previous crimes included strangling David Williams with a lanyard and inflicting 113 injuries on Julie Williams before raping and murdering Nicole McGregor. He was sentenced to a whole-life order, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life in prison.

Official Statements

Christopher Atkinson from the Crown Prosecution Service stated, “Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.” Meanwhile, Judge Mr Justice Wall described Russell as an “exceptionally dangerous” and manipulative man.

Russell is scheduled to appear at Newton Aycliffe magistrates’ court via video link on March 11, 2026. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the circumstances leading to the attack on Huntley.
