Concerns Rise Over Fake Mounjaro Pens Amid New Prescription Incentives for GPs

What Happened

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has alerted certain patients about the potential dispensing of counterfeit Mounjaro (tirzepatide) KwikPen 15mg solution for injection from The Private Pharmacy Clinic in Birmingham. The affected batch number is D873576, which corresponds to a legitimate batch of the genuine Mounjaro KwikPen 7.5mg, indicating that only the 15mg pens are impacted.

Why It Matters

This incident raises significant concerns regarding patient safety, as the counterfeit pens may not meet sterile manufacturing conditions, despite containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. Dr. Alison Cave, Chief Safety Officer at the MHRA, emphasized the importance of checking batch numbers and advised patients to cease use of the affected pens immediately. Meanwhile, the UK government is incentivizing General Practitioners (GPs) to prescribe Mounjaro, with bonuses of up to £3,000 per year under the new GP contract starting in April 2026. This initiative aims to address the obesity crisis, as nearly two-thirds of adults in England are estimated to be overweight or living with obesity.

What’s Next

The rollout of Mounjaro is expected to expand, with eligibility criteria set to lower in the coming years. However, access remains limited to those with severe obesity and specific health conditions. While the incentive payments are a step forward, experts caution that the availability of weight loss drugs like Mounjaro will still be restricted, focusing on patients with the greatest clinical need. The MHRA continues to monitor the situation regarding counterfeit products and encourages patients to report any concerns.
