Edinburgh Weather: Misleading Forecasts Impact Visitor Attractions

Misleading weather forecasts are costing Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park up to £40,000 a day, according to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. The organization has raised concerns about how weather information is presented, particularly in relation to its impact on visitor numbers.

Visitor numbers can drop by 30% on days when unfavorable weather forecasts are issued. A single rain icon displayed for the entire day can deter potential visitors, even if rain is only expected for a short period. This has been particularly damaging during school holidays, where misleading forecasts can reduce visitor numbers by as much as 2,000 people.

Ben Supple, a representative of the Royal Zoological Society, stated, “Many people decide how they will spend their day based on the weather and a quick glance at their phone.” He added, “Unfortunately, this can create the misleading impression that the whole day will be wet and put people off visiting.”

More than 80 visitor attractions have signed a letter to the Met Office, urging a review of how weather forecasts are presented. The charity claims that a single raincloud icon can cost thousands in lost revenue, with predicted losses reaching £137,000 per day due to misleading forecasts.

Michael Golding emphasized the importance of accurate weather information, stating, “Accurate weather information is essential for decision-making, particularly for families, older visitors, and people with additional needs who often have to plan further ahead.”

Practical improvements suggested by the Royal Zoological Society include splitting weather icons into day and night conditions to provide clearer information to the public.

This issue is not new; similar complaints about weather forecasts affecting visitor attractions have been raised in the past, notably in 2009. The ongoing criticism highlights the need for better communication of weather information to support the tourism sector.

The annual contribution of tourism to the UK economy is approximately £147 billion, with domestic day visits accounting for around £50 billion. Ensuring accurate weather forecasts is crucial for maintaining this vital sector.

As the Royal Zoological Society continues to advocate for change, the hope is that improved weather forecast presentations will lead to increased visitor numbers and reduced financial losses for attractions in Edinburgh.
