Stranger Things Takes to Broadway

Stranger Things: The First Shadow has made its debut on Broadway, featuring Burke Swanson in the role of James Hopper Jr. This production expands the narrative universe of the popular Netflix series, which has captivated audiences since its launch.

Burke Swanson, who portrays James Hopper Jr., is part of a larger ensemble that includes notable figures from the original series, such as David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper. Swanson has also been actively engaging with fans through a vlog series that highlights the backstage crew involved in the production, providing a unique glimpse into the making of the show.

Episodes of Swanson’s vlog are released weekly on Tuesdays, allowing fans to stay connected with the behind-the-scenes action and the creative processes that bring Stranger Things to life on stage. The production has generated significant interest, particularly among students and young filmmakers.

Recently, film students from the University of North Georgia (UNG) attended a private screening of a behind-the-scenes documentary about Stranger Things. Courtney Blair, a UNG junior studying film and digital media, expressed her excitement about the production, stating, “It’s so inspiring knowing it’s not as far-fetched as I thought it was. It’s right in front of me.” This enthusiasm reflects the growing interest in the intersection of theater and popular media.

In addition to the Broadway production, the legacy of Stranger Things continues to resonate with audiences. David Harbour, known for his role as Jim Hopper, previously played MI6 agent Roger Anderson in the short-lived series Pan Am, which aired for 14 episodes and received three Emmy nominations in 2012. The show was set in the 1960s and faced challenges that ultimately led to its cancellation, with Robbie, a former cast member, attributing its demise to an early tonal shift.

Justis Brokenrope, who runs Wathéča Records, focused on North American indigenous artists, is also connected to the production, showcasing the diverse talents involved in bringing Stranger Things: The First Shadow to life. The Broadway adaptation aims to capture the essence of the original series while exploring new narratives that resonate with both existing fans and new audiences.

As the production continues to unfold, observers are eager to see how it will be received by theatergoers and whether it will successfully bridge the gap between the beloved Netflix series and live performance. Details remain unconfirmed regarding future expansions of the Stranger Things franchise on stage or screen, but the current production has certainly set a high bar for what is to come.
