What Happened?
Starting from 25 February 2026, nationals from 85 countries who currently do not require a visa to enter the UK will be mandated to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling. This change, reported by multiple sources, aims to create a more streamlined and secure immigration system for the millions of travelers entering the UK each year.
Why It Matters
The ETA is a digital permit that allows short stays of up to six months for purposes such as tourism or family visits. It is important to note that the ETA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the UK. Eligible visitors, including those from the EU, USA, Canada, and Australia, must secure an ETA to board their transport. Failure to do so will result in airlines and other carriers refusing boarding.
What’s Next?
As of now, the UK government has issued over 13.3 million ETAs since the phased rollout began in October 2023. However, the requirement for an ETA will become mandatory in 2026, and travelers are advised to apply at least three working days prior to their journey. The cost of an ETA is £16, and each authorization lasts for two years. Employers and individuals planning travel to the UK should prepare accordingly to avoid disruptions.
