The outage has significantly impacted major US cities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington, and New York. As of 10:03 PM EST on March 10, over 6,000 users reported problems on Downdetector, indicating a widespread issue.
Among the complaints, 68% involved app disruptions, 19% were related to server connection issues, and 7% concerned posting troubles. Notably, Instagram’s messaging system became completely non-functional during the outage, leading users to turn to other platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to continue their conversations.
Users have taken to social media to express their frustrations. One user tweeted, “Is Instagram down? I can’t reply to my friend,” while another exclaimed, “Instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN.” Others questioned the status of Instagram’s direct messaging, asking, “Are Instagram DMs down or… am I cooked?”
In response to the situation, Instagram Communications acknowledged the issues, stating, “We are aware some of you might be experiencing issues with IG at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.” However, Instagram has not yet provided detailed information about the cause of the outage.
This incident highlights the ongoing need for assurance from Meta Platforms regarding the resilience of Instagram’s infrastructure and the reliability of its direct messaging system. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the cause of the disruption and when services will be fully restored.
