Stokes’ impact on English cricket

Ben Stokes, a prominent figure in English cricket, has announced his retirement from international cricket. His career has been marked by significant moments, including his contributions to England‘s 50-over World Cup triumph in 2019 and the T20 World Cup title in 2022. These achievements place him alongside other celebrated sports figures who have engineered World Cup victories for England.

Stokes‘ influence extended beyond statistics, though his final Test tallies of 7,273 runs and 252 wickets position him in a statistical bracket with cricketing legends. He is often described as a cricketer of defining moments, with notable performances in Perth in 2013, Cape Town in 2016, and during the 2019 summer at Lord’s and Headingley. His leadership also saw England achieve significant wins in Rawalpindi and Hyderabad.

His career included overcoming challenges, such as being hit for four consecutive sixes in a T20 World Cup final and an incident in Bristol. Despite these hurdles, he became a significant figure in modern British sport. Stokes leaves two primary legacies: his role as a superhero all-rounder, continuing a tradition of influential players, and his captaincy.

As captain, Stokes was not initially tipped for leadership but proved to be an effective man-manager and tactician. He led England to 24 wins in 44 matches, a higher win rate than any captain since Mike Brearley. His tenure as captain, alongside head coach Brendon McCullum, revitalized English cricket, which had previously experienced a period of struggle with only one win in 17 Tests.

The approach under Stokes and McCullum, often referred to as ‘Bazball’, aimed to challenge traditional perceptions of Test cricket, leading to exhilarating play and, for a time, sensational results. However, his captaincy did not culminate in an Ashes series victory, with the 2023 series and a subsequent tour proving challenging. The aftermath of that tour contributed to the decision regarding his departure.

The decision and its implications

Stokes‘ decision to retire was finalized on a Saturday, leaving England facing a future they had hoped to postpone. Both McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key were aware of how close Stokes was to ending his international career.

The retirement comes after a series defeat by New Zealand at Trent Bridge. Stokes had reportedly considered ending his career before a specific incident in a London nightclub, with feelings of retirement emerging during the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. He has dismissed suggestions that his retirement might be temporary, stating he expects to be in a hospitality box rather than playing if another opportunity against Australia arose.

His departure creates immediate questions for the England team, particularly regarding the captaincy and the balance of the playing XI. Stokes has expressed his full support for Harry Brook as his successor, noting that Brook was made vice-captain for a reason. However, Joe Root was chosen to captain the second Test against New Zealand during an investigation involving Stokes.

Brook has been vice-captain since the end of last summer. Rob Key had previously indicated it was not the right time for Brook to take on the captaincy, even on an interim basis. McCullum has stated that there are many options for captaincy beyond Brook, with conversations expected to begin soon. Other potential candidates include a return to captaincy for Joe Root, though his previous tactical decisions have been questioned, and the added workload might not be desirable for him.

Younger players like Jacob Bethell, who has led England in T20s, and Ben Duckett, who has captained in the County Championship and The Hundred, are also mentioned. Ollie Robinson, who captains his county, Sussex, is another name in consideration. The departure of Stokes also follows a period where other world-class players, including James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, and Moeen Ali, have retired.

Stokes has committed to continuing to play for Durham, including in the One-Day Cup, and has communicated with coach Ryan Campbell about his availability. He will take a holiday.

New Zealand seals series victory

New Zealand secured a 2-1 series victory over England with a 160-run win at Trent Bridge. This match marked the final appearance for Ben Stokes as an England cricketer. The hosts’ defeat was their seventh in their last nine Test matches and their first home series defeat in a three-Test series or more since 2012.

The final day at Trent Bridge saw England struggle to mount a significant challenge. Despite a half-century from Jamie Smith, who scored 60 off 90 balls, the team ultimately fell short. The match concluded an anti-climactic series for England, particularly given it was Stokes‘ farewell game.

Stokes‘ career has been characterized by remarkable performances with both bat and ball, including his unbeaten 135 in the 2019 Ashes Test at Headingley. However, his retirement announcement on the fourth afternoon preceded a chaotic period for England, as several top-order batters lost their wickets, leaving the team in a difficult position at 103-4, chasing 373, at the start of day five.

England’s final day resistance

On the final day, Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson formed a 75-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Atkinson contributed 19 runs and faced 70 balls, while Smith continued to score, including a straight six off Mitchell Santner. This partnership provided some resistance against New Zealand‘s bowling attack, which was described as inexperienced and ailing, with Will O’Rourke pulling up with a hamstring injury during the morning session.

However, before this partnership, England had lost several key wickets on the previous evening, including Stokes (30 off 20), Jacob Bethell (0), Harry Brook (21 off 9), and Ben Duckett (36 off 42). On the fifth day, Emilio Gay (10) was dismissed in the fourth over, followed by Joe Root (18) being run out four balls later. Nathan Smith (2-64), who was the series’ leading wicket-taker with 16, claimed Gay‘s wicket.

Root‘s dismissal was one of two run-outs on the final day, highlighting New Zealand‘s strong fielding throughout the series. Henry Nicholls executed a direct hit despite seemingly losing his footing, sending Root back to the pavilion. Santner (2-54) eventually dismissed Atkinson leg before wicket just before the lunch interval. After lunch, Jofra Archer edged Smith behind, and Josh Tongue (2) was run out by Santner. Smith reached his 87-ball fifty with three consecutive boundaries before being caught out off Santner, bringing the match and series to its conclusion.

Stokes’ retirement and future fixtures

Ben Stokes explained his decision to retire, stating that he did not take the decision lightly and had consulted with trusted individuals. He mentioned that he tried to prepare himself to continue beyond this series but found he could not. Stokes informed his close contacts the night before and the team on the morning of his announcement. He acknowledged the controversy surrounding his final game but expressed enjoyment for every moment on the field and looks forward to reflecting on his career with fond memories.

England head coach Brendon McCullum commented on Stokes‘ impact as a leader throughout his career and since becoming captain. McCullum stated that he tried to persuade Stokes not to retire when the decision was confirmed, but it became clear that Stokes was at peace with his choice. McCullum expressed sadness but also privilege for having worked closely with Stokes over the past four years, considering him a good friend.

Following the Test series, England‘s men’s team is scheduled to play their first T20 international against India at Chester-le-Street, with a start time of 17:30 BST. The Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final between Australia and West Indies will take place tomorrow at The Oval at 14:30 BST. England‘s women’s team will play their semi-final against South Africa at the same venue on Thursday at 18:30.

The series results were: England won the First Test at Lord’s by 115 runs, New Zealand won the Second Test at The Kia Oval by 253 runs, and New Zealand won the Third Test at Trent Bridge by 160 runs.

New Zealand secure series victory

New Zealand claimed a 2-1 series victory against England, winning the third and deciding Test at Trent Bridge by 160 runs. This defeat marked the end of Ben Stokes‘ international career, concluding his 15-year tenure with England and a four-year captaincy reign.

The final day in Nottingham saw England, chasing 373 for victory, collapse to 212 all out. The result means New Zealand secured only their fourth series win in England, and their first series win of three or more Tests in the country in 14 years. The Black Caps were also the last visiting team to win a series in England, achieving this in 2021.

The match concluded with Jamie Smith being caught at long-off, sealing New Zealand’s triumph. This series victory for New Zealand comes despite the retirement of their own prominent player, Kane Williamson, after the first Test of the series.

England’s final day struggles

England’s pursuit of 373 began with an early setback on the final day. The fourth over saw Emilio Gay depart, followed by the crucial run-out of Joe Root by Henry Nicholls. This left England in a difficult position, with any hopes of a prolonged fight quickly diminishing.

Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson offered some resistance, forming a 75-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Smith achieved his second half-century in 11 months during this stand. However, Atkinson was dismissed just before lunch, and Josh Tongue fell victim to another direct hit, this time from Mitchell Santner, before Smith’s eventual dismissal.

The batting performance on Sunday evening was described as chaotic, with a desire to make an impact on the target. However, the approach on Monday was more orthodox, despite the earlier recklessness.

Stokes’ departure and England’s future

Ben Stokes‘ final Test was not the fitting end many might have anticipated for a player known for his significant contributions and never-say-die attitude. His announcement on Sunday, prior to the final day’s play, was described as one of the most extraordinary days in English cricket history.

The defeat marks England’s seventh loss in nine Tests and extends a run without a series win since 2024. The team now faces the challenge of rebuilding after the Ashes, and without their captain and one of their most influential players.

The immediate future for England includes a white-ball series against India, scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Looking further ahead, England will need to appoint a new captain for their next Test against Pakistan in August, with names like Harry Brook and Joe Root being considered. The absence of Stokes’ all-round ability and leadership will require the team to find new ways to balance and inspire its players, particularly with the next Ashes series approximately a year away.

Jofra Archer was named England’s player of the series for his 11 wickets, despite missing the first Test. Daryl Mitchell was awarded player of the match for his century. New Zealand’s series victory is their second major away series win in the last two years, following a win against India in late 2024.

Stokes announces international retirement

Ben Stokes, the England captain, has announced his retirement from international cricket, with his final appearance set to be on day five of the third Test against New Zealand. The decision was made public on Sunday, during day four of the ongoing Test match at Trent Bridge. Stokes, who is 35, communicated his decision to his teammates before the start of day four’s play. His retirement was officially announced at 15:25 BST.

The all-rounder’s announcement came as a surprise to many, particularly as he was actively bowling during the match when the news broke. In a remarkable turn of events, Stokes took a wicket with his very next delivery after his retirement was confirmed, dismissing Zak Foulkes. This decision marks the end of a 15-year international career for one of England‘s most prominent cricketers.

Stokes explained that ending his international career was the “best thing” for him personally. He denied that the decision was a direct result of recent turbulent events, including a nightclub incident that led to him missing the second Test. He stated that the decision was made after careful consideration, including thoughts he had after the Ashes series and prior to the New Zealand series opener at Lord’s. Stokes indicated that the Lord’s Test brought back “negative feelings” about his career trajectory, suggesting he might have experienced burnout from his efforts to make things right after returning from the Ashes.

Despite his international retirement, Stokes confirmed he would continue to play for his boyhood club, Durham. He expressed excitement about this next chapter, which he believes will allow him to maintain his love for the game that has defined his career since childhood. His decision was described as a “tough” one, made after giving himself time and consulting with many individuals throughout the process.

Vaughan calls for further leadership changes

Following Stokes’ retirement, former captain Michael Vaughan suggested that more leadership changes are needed within English cricket. Vaughan stated he would be “absolutely staggered” if the current leadership group remained intact. This group includes Stokes, coach Brendon McCullum, and director of men’s cricket Rob Key, all of whom were retained in their roles by England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Richard Gould after the previous winter’s Ashes defeat.

Vaughan believes that change is necessary given the recent cricketing performance. He highlighted a “lack of trust” between Stokes and the ECB, particularly following the nightclub incident earlier this month, which he suggested might have been a “final nail” in the coffin. Vaughan indicated that there was fault on both sides regarding how the ECB handled Stokes during that period.

The recent Ashes series, which saw England defeated 4-1, was reportedly marred by off-field issues and accusations of an overly relaxed environment. This series was intended to be a reset after that defeat. Vaughan speculated that a new leadership group might eventually approach Stokes about a potential return for the next home Ashes series against Australia in 2027, an idea he would not rule out.

Stokes’ career has been marked by several high-profile off-field incidents and injuries. In 2017, he was involved in an incident outside a Bristol nightclub, leading to an affray charge, though he was later cleared. This incident caused him to miss the 2017-18 Ashes tour. In 2021, he took a break from cricket to focus on his mental well-being, a period during which he detailed the impact of the Bristol incident and the death of his father.

Injuries have also affected Stokes’ career, notably a left-knee problem in 2023 and 2024. This summer, he returned from a broken cheekbone sustained while coaching the Durham academy. He led England to a win in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s but missed the second Test due to the aforementioned nightclub incident, where a member of England‘s security staff was reportedly struck by a rugby player. Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson were present during this incident but were cleared to return for the third Test. Before the match in Nottingham, Stokes apologised to his teammates but did not comment on whether he felt supported by the ECB.

Impact and potential successors

Stokes’ retirement brings to an end a career filled with iconic moments in English sporting history. He was instrumental in England winning the World Cup for the first time in 2019, with his 84 runs against New Zealand. Six weeks later, he nearly single-handedly secured victory against Australia in the third Ashes Test at Headingley with an unbeaten 135. These achievements led to him being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

As captain, Stokes, alongside coach Brendon McCullum, initiated the “Bazball” revolution in 2022, promoting an attacking and fearless style of cricket. This approach revitalised a team that had previously won only one of 17 Tests, leading to immediate success with England winning 10 of their first 11 Tests under their leadership. While Stokes maintained a strong winning percentage as captain, his methods faced challenges against top opponents, including a 2-2 draw in the home Ashes of 2023 and a 4-1 defeat in India the following winter.

The aim after the India tour was to build a new team to defeat India at home in 2025 and regain the Ashes in Australia. However, England drew 2-2 with India and were subsequently beaten 4-1 in Australia, a tour reportedly affected by accusations of a drinking culture. A midnight curfew was imposed during that tour, which Stokes reportedly broke in his first match back after the Ashes.

During his final innings, Stokes was promoted to open the batting, scoring 30 runs off 20 balls before being caught. He received a guard of honour from both teams and a standing ovation upon his dismissal. England closed the day on 103-4, needing 270 more runs to avoid a series defeat. The decision to open was tactical, aimed at creating “chaos” and reducing the target. Head coach Brendon McCullum praised Stokes, calling him a “legend that inspires” young players.

The question of who will succeed Stokes as England captain remains. Potential options include white-ball captain Harry Brook and former captain Joe Root. England‘s next Test match is against Pakistan at Headingley on 19 August.

The decisive Third Rothesay Test between England and New Zealand at Trent Bridge hangs in the balance after a dramatic third day. New Zealand concluded the day with a lead of 204 runs, reaching 120-3 in their second innings, following England‘s earlier collapse.

The pitch, initially flat for the first two days, showed significant deterioration on Saturday, leading to 11 wickets falling. This change in conditions has placed England in a precarious position, with a challenging run chase anticipated.

New Zealand builds significant lead

New Zealand began their second innings at Trent Bridge with a first-innings lead of 84 runs. Despite an early setback, losing two wickets for 12 runs and later being 51-3, Rachin Ravindra‘s unbeaten 60 runs, supported by Daryl Mitchell‘s 26 not out, ensured the tourists maintained control. Their partnership contributed 69 runs, leaving New Zealand in a strong position to push for a series victory.

Jofra Archer provided a brief spark for England after tea, dismissing New Zealand‘s first-innings centurions, Tom Latham and Devon Conway, within 13 deliveries. Archer trapped Latham lbw and later had Conway caught at second slip after a blow to the helmet. However, this intervention followed England‘s own batting struggles earlier in the day.

Rachin Ravindra’s unbeaten 60 settled New Zealand’s second innings after their openers were dismissed early.Photograph: Philip Brown/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

The Black Caps had entered the match without key players Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, and Glenn Phillips. Additionally, Blair Tickner was replaced by concussion substitute Zak Foulkes on day two. Despite these absences, the team has shown resilience, with Ravindra and Mitchell repelling England‘s bowling attack.

England’s batting collapse and bowling efforts

England started day three with an opportunity to reduce New Zealand‘s first-innings total of 438. However, they lost three crucial wickets for just 10 runs within the first six overs of the day. Joe Root and Jacob Bethell, who were unbeaten overnight, were dismissed without adding to their scores of 21 and 74 respectively. Jamie Smith managed only one run.

Nathan Smith removed Root lbw, while Bethell edged a delivery from Will O’Rourke. Jamie Smith was also dismissed by Nathan Smith, continuing a challenging match for the England wicketkeeper. Harry Brook contributed a calm 58 runs from 80 balls, but England‘s tail quickly collapsed, losing their last three wickets for four runs, resulting in a total of 354 all out.

Zak Foulkes, the concussion substitute, proved to be a significant factor for New Zealand, taking three wickets on Saturday, including those of Brook and England captain Ben Stokes. Stokes, playing his first match since being unavailable for the second Test, was bowled for 15 by Foulkes. Foulkes‘s slower seam deliveries have been effective on the deteriorating surface.

England got themselves back in the match on day two.Picture:Getty Credit: lbc.co.uk

England‘s bowling efforts saw Jofra Archer unnerving Devon Conway with a blow to the helmet before dismissing him. Gus Atkinson also secured a wicket, getting Henry Nicholls to nick one to slip. However, the partnership between Ravindra and Mitchell proved difficult to break, with Stokes‘s six-over spell yielding no wickets.

Implications for England’s series hopes

The outcome of this match is crucial for England. A loss would extend their poor run, with only two wins in their last 10 matches. Captain Ben Stokes had previously stated that his team was under the “highest pressure” in his four years in charge, given the circumstances and off-field controversies.

The pitch conditions have played a significant role in the acceleration of the match, with 11 wickets falling on Saturday compared to 12 wickets over the first two days. The unevenness of the surface is expected to make the run chase particularly difficult for England. The team will need to secure seven more wickets on day four to have a chance at victory.

England has memories of a remarkable win against New Zealand at this ground in 2022, though on a very different pitch. The current situation suggests a challenging path ahead for the home side in their pursuit of a series win.

The match continues on day four, with New Zealand holding a substantial lead of 204 runs.

England’s Path to the Semi-Finals

England has advanced to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after securing a 38-run victory against West Indies at Lord’s on Wednesday evening. The win ensures England maintains an unbeaten record in the tournament and earns a direct place in the knockout stages, with one group stage match still pending. This outcome was crucial for England, as a loss could have led to a decisive final group game against New Zealand for a semi-final spot.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge was a key contributor, scoring a half-century, while Heather Knight added 43 runs. Despite some challenging moments during their innings, England posted a total of 186 runs. Charlie Dean, serving as stand-in captain, demonstrated composure under pressure, including hitting two reverse-sweeps for four in the final over and later taking two wickets.

England's Danni Wyatt-Hodge sweeps for more runs during England’s comprehensive win against West Indies.Photograph: Tom Jenkins Credit: theguardian.com

Dean will continue to captain England in their upcoming group-stage match against New Zealand on Saturday. An MRI scan on Wednesday indicated that Nat Sciver-Brunt’s calf injury is responding positively to treatment, with hopes for her to be fit for next week’s semi-final after further rehabilitation.

Match Highlights and Controversies

The match saw West Indies, who had previously eliminated England in the 2024 World Cup, struggle in the field. Even captain Hayley Matthews dropped a catch at extra cover, giving Knight a reprieve on 14 runs. Matthews was later involved in a controversial dismissal, adjudged caught behind by the TV umpire despite initial on-field rulings of not out and the umpire’s on-air comments about a visible gap between bat and ball. Matthews departed for 14 runs following the decision.

The West Indian innings gradually faltered after this point. Deandra Dottin hit a six before being caught by Alice Capsey attempting another. Sophie Ecclestone bowled Shemaine Campbelle, who missed a sweep shot. Jahzara Claxton managed 21 runs from 34 balls before being caught by Linsey Smith in the penultimate over.

Shemaine Campbelle is bowled by Sophie Ecclestone.Photograph: Tom Jenkins Credit: theguardian.com

Despite not being able to completely finish off the West Indies innings, with Chinelle Henry scoring an eleventh-hour half-century after being dropped on 28 runs, England secured the win. Wyatt-Hodge’s score of 65 runs from 42 balls made her the leading tournament run-scorer, surpassing Scotland’s Darcey Carter.

Tournament Implications and Conditions

The West Indies still have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals but must defeat Ireland on Saturday to guarantee their spot. New Zealand, the reigning champions, need West Indies to lose and then secure a significant win against England to have any hope of progressing. On the other side of the draw, a crucial match between Australia and India on Sunday will help determine England’s potential semi-final opponent. Australia currently leads their group, while India and South Africa are vying for the final semi-final position.

Both teams contended with challenging conditions, including unprecedented 35-degree heat. The warm weather in St John’s Wood, London, was comparable to playing in Dubai during the 2024 World Cup, according to Wyatt-Hodge. Despite the heat, England’s captain Charlie Dean expressed confidence in her team’s preparation and ability to perform under such conditions, noting that they have various cooling methods and focus on hydration.

England’s captain Charlie Dean plays a shot as a scorer watches through a window in the scoreboard.Photograph: Tom Jenkins Credit: theguardian.com

Around 14,000 spectators were present at Lord’s, despite advice for 3,000 ticket holders to avoid non-essential travel due to the heat. Wyatt-Hodge expressed her ambition to win the T20 World Cup, stating, “I’ve never won a T20 World Cup, so I want to keep scoring runs, keep contributing, and enjoy it.”

England secured a four-wicket victory over Ireland in the T20 World Cup in Southampton, chasing down 119 runs with 15 balls remaining. However, the win was overshadowed by an injury concern for captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who retired hurt after scoring 48.

Sciver-Brunt, who has recently returned from a calf injury, left the field with England needing just nine runs for victory. She reportedly experienced “tightness” in her left calf, the same leg as her previous injury, and was withdrawn as a precaution. She will be assessed by medics before England’s next match.

The match, which started an hour late due to rain, saw England bowl first. Ireland posted a total of 118 for nine from their 20 overs. Sophie Ecclestone took three wickets, while Dani Gibson and Charlie Dean each claimed two wickets. Orla Prendergast was Ireland’s top scorer with 26 runs from 18 balls, and Louise Little contributed 26 not out from 15 balls.

England’s chase began with a wobble, as they were reduced to 35 for three. Openers Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Amy Jones, who scored 16 and nine respectively, both fell to catches. Alice Capsey was then bowled by Prendergast for five.

Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight then stabilised the innings with a partnership of 64 runs from 49 balls. Knight was eventually dismissed leg-before for 26 by Prendergast. After Sciver-Brunt’s retirement, Freya Kemp was run out for two. Charlie Dean then hit a boundary through the covers, and Alice Tector concluded the chase.

The result gives England two wins from two matches in their home World Cup campaign. Ireland, meanwhile, have now lost both of their matches in the tournament. Ireland will remain in Southampton for their next fixture against New Zealand on Friday.

The injury to Sciver-Brunt presents a significant concern for England, especially as she is considered a key player. England’s next match is scheduled against Scotland at Headingley.

In other tournament news, Sri Lanka achieved a higher run-chase of 151 against New Zealand on the same pitch earlier in the day. This result leaves New Zealand, the reigning champions, on the brink of elimination with two losses from two matches, opening up Group B. The winner of Thursday’s match between Scotland and West Indies will be in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages alongside group leaders England.

Charlie Dean, who previously played for Southern Vipers and Hampshire, delivered a wicket maiden in the powerplay, finishing with figures of two for 11. Ecclestone, despite conceding 13 runs in her first over, went on to take three wickets for 22 runs. Gibson also contributed with two wickets for 10 runs in her two overs. Ireland’s Gaby Lewis, who scored a century at this ground in a One-Day Cup final last September, was dismissed for a duck.

Louise Little’s cameo included dispatching Lauren Bell’s 20th over for 17 runs. Little was playing in the match due to Ava Canning undergoing a precautionary scan for a lower back issue. Ireland’s performance, despite their loss, was seen as more encouraging than their previous defeat by Scotland.

England has four days until their next match against Scotland.

Director of Cricket Rob Key is considering implementing an alcohol ban for the England team and has not guaranteed that Ben Stokes will retain his position as Test captain. This follows an incident involving Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson at a London nightclub.

Both Stokes and Atkinson will not participate in the second Test against New Zealand, which begins on 17 June. The pair were involved in an incident in the early hours of Monday morning and are currently under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

This marks the latest alcohol-related issue for the England team within the past six months. Six players from the team that secured a victory over the Black Caps at Lord’s in the first Test have been involved in late-night incidents.

Following allegations of a drinking culture during the winter, England had introduced a midnight curfew. Stokes and Atkinson reportedly broke this curfew.

Key indicated that further measures might be necessary for England to regain public trust. He questioned whether the team has been strict enough and if a complete alcohol ban is now required, even after match victories.

He stated that he needs to carefully consider these decisions to avoid rash actions that could negatively impact the team or make players feel overly restricted. Key emphasised that players must demonstrate trustworthiness to the public, acknowledging that it is currently difficult to assert they can be trusted.

The ECB confirmed on Monday that the pair had breached the curfew. It was later revealed that Stokes, 35, and Atkinson, 28, were present when a member of the England security staff was reportedly struck by Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa, resulting in the security member requiring medical attention.

Key confirmed that the curfew remains in effect throughout the series against New Zealand. Atkinson reportedly claimed he was unaware of the curfew’s operation after the first Test concluded on Sunday.

Captaincy in question

When asked about the possibility of Stokes resigning the captaincy or retiring from playing, Key stated that Stokes had not indicated such intentions. Regarding Stokes’ future as a player for England, Key said he saw no reason why he would not play again.

However, Key offered no guarantees about Stokes resuming the captaincy, a role he has held since 2022. He explained that an investigation needs to be completed to determine the exact events before any decisions are made.

Key stressed that no ultimatum has been given to Stokes, and ongoing communication is focused on his well-being during what has been described as a traumatic period for him. He added that time is an ally in this situation, allowing for careful consideration.

Harry Brook, the vice-captain of the Test team, will not be leading the side for the second Test; instead, the captaincy has been passed to Joe Root.

Brook, 27, was involved in his own nightclub incident in Wellington in October, where he was reportedly punched by a bouncer the night before leading England in a one-day international against New Zealand. He received an ECB maximum fine of £50,000 in February for this incident.

Key acknowledged that there were multiple reasons for not selecting Brook as interim captain, but admitted that his involvement in the Wellington incident made it challenging to consider him for the role. Former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain also commented on the potential difficulties of appointing Brook, given his past conduct and existing responsibilities as the white-ball captain.

Root, 35, will captain England for a record 65th Test. He previously stepped down from the role after five years, citing the toll it took on him. Despite winning only one of his last 17 Tests as captain, his experience and unblemished record off the field make him a sensible choice for this interim period, according to Atherton and Hussain.

Impact on the team’s reputation

The scrutiny of England’s off-field activities has been compounded by poor on-field performances, including a 4-1 Ashes series defeat. The ECB conducted a review of the tour to Australia but decided to retain Key, Stokes, and head coach Brendon McCullum in their positions.

Stokes’ captaincy record includes 24 wins from 43 matches, giving him a high success rate among captains since 1981. However, the recurring controversies are overshadowing his tenure and risk damaging the sport’s reputation in the country.

Key denied that the England team has become a “national embarrassment,” highlighting the success of the Stokes and McCullum partnership and the team’s achievements. He noted that the victory over New Zealand at Lord’s was a positive step after the Ashes defeat.

Key expressed his frustration, stating that news of the latest indiscretion left him with a “sinking feeling, then anger, then disbelief.” He empathised with supporters who are tired of the team’s behaviour, acknowledging that he shares their feelings.

He described the shock of Stokes’ involvement, given the extensive work done to reconnect with the game. Key felt that the incident was a significant setback to their efforts. He concluded that while it is difficult to defend the current situation, he believes the team is on the right path and will be judged by its future actions.

The second Test between England and New Zealand is scheduled to take place from 17-21 June at The Oval.

Ben Stokes will not be available for England‘s second Test against New Zealand at The Oval following an incident at a London nightclub. As a result, Joe Root has been named interim captain for the match, which is scheduled to begin on 17 June.

Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson were both omitted from the squad after reportedly breaking the team’s midnight curfew in the early hours of Monday morning. The incident occurred when a member of England’s security staff was reportedly struck by Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is currently investigating the actions of Stokes and Atkinson. A separate inquiry is also being conducted by the Cricket Regulator, which may take several weeks to conclude. The ECB stated that due to the ongoing investigation, neither player was made available for selection.

Root returns to captaincy

Root’s appointment marks a return to the captaincy for the Yorkshire batter. He previously led England in 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022, a record number, before stepping down after a period that included one win in 17 Tests. Stokes, his close friend, then succeeded him in the role.

The England squad for the second Test includes several familiar names and some additions. Jofra Archer, a fast bowler from Sussex, and Jordan Cox, an Essex batter, have been added to the squad that secured a 115-run victory in the first Test at Lord’s.

The full squad for the second Test against New Zealand is:

Joe Root (Yorkshire, captain)

Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire)

Jofra Archer (Sussex)

Sonny Baker (Hampshire)

Shoaib Bashir (Derbyshire)

Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire)

Harry Brook (Yorkshire)

Jordan Cox (Essex)

Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire)

Matthew Fisher (Surrey)

Emilio Gay (Durham)

James Rew (Somerset)

Ollie Robinson (Sussex)

Jamie Smith (Surrey)

Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire)

Harry Brook, who serves as England’s vice-captain, was not considered for the interim captaincy. This decision comes after Brook was involved in his own nightclub incident in October, prior to a one-day international against New Zealand in Wellington, where he was reportedly punched by a bouncer.

Impact on the team

The absence of Stokes, an all-rounder, and Atkinson, a key pace bowler, presents a challenge for England. While Stokes’ batting form has been under scrutiny, his all-round capabilities are considered crucial for team balance. Atkinson, who is 28, showed strong form in the first Test, taking seven wickets.

The situation could pave the way for Archer‘s return, as he missed the first Test after his participation in the Indian Premier League. Depending on the pitch conditions, Rehan Ahmed, a spin-bowling all-rounder, could be a suitable replacement for Stokes. Ahmed was part of the squad for the first Test but did not make the final XI.

If Ahmed steps in for Stokes, Shoaib Bashir, the off-spinner who played in the first Test but did not bowl, might make way to allow England to field four specialist seamers. Another option for replacing Stokes would be to include a specialist batter, with uncapped James Rew having been in the squad for the first Test.

Jordan Cox, 25, has been included in several England Test squads but has not yet made his debut. He was set to debut as wicketkeeper during the 2024 tour of New Zealand but suffered a broken thumb in the nets.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan expressed his view that Stokes should not lose his captaincy over the incident. He suggested that while Stokes made a mistake by breaking curfew, it should not be a sacking offence. Vaughan also commented on the ECB’s handling of previous incidents, noting that the lenient approach with Brook might have set a precedent.

The ECB has granted Stokes, 35, time to consider his options and has denied any suggestions that he has been asked to resign. This controversy follows a 4-1 Ashes tour of Australia that was also marked by off-field issues. The second Test is scheduled to begin on 17 June.

An incident at a London nightclub involving England cricket captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson is under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and a Prem Rugby club. The incident, which also involved a Saracens academy rugby union player, occurred in the early hours of Monday morning following England‘s victory over New Zealand at Lord’s on Sunday.

The ECB stated that the England players were involved in a “breach of team protocols.” Both Stokes and Atkinson have been referred to the Cricket Regulator, an independent disciplinary body. A decision is anticipated soon regarding their participation in the second Test against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on 17 June at The Oval. A squad without them could be announced as early as Tuesday.

The Saracens club confirmed awareness of an incident involving an academy player on Sunday evening and is currently gathering facts. They are in contact with relevant authorities and individuals, and the matter will be reviewed once this process is complete.

Investigation Details and Team Protocols

The ECB’s statement indicated that they are seeking further information about the incident. The investigation relates to more than just a breach of the team’s midnight curfew, which was reportedly still in effect despite the conclusion of the first Test. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and further updates are expected.

The midnight curfew was initially imposed for the limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka in January and the subsequent T20 World Cup. It has remained in place for the start of the Test summer, which marked Stokes‘ return to lead the side. This protocol was introduced after previous off-field conduct issues, including an incident involving white-ball captain Harry Brook in Wellington before a one-day international against New Zealand.

Brook was reportedly punched by a nightclub bouncer and later admitted to lying about being alone, with teammates Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue also present. He and Bethell were reprimanded by the Cricket Regulator. Another instance involved videos of players circulating on social media during a mid-series break in Noosa during the Ashes tour.

Managing director of men’s cricket, Rob Key, investigated the Noosa trip and denied the team had a drinking culture, but stated he does not agree with such a culture. Men’s coach Brendon McCullum has also spoken about the importance of cultural and disciplinary standards, emphasising the responsibilities of representing one’s country.

Impact on Players and Future Selection

The incident could have significant implications for both Stokes and Atkinson. Atkinson, who is 28, has been a key member of the squad since his debut, becoming England‘s leading wicket-taker with 76 wickets in 17 matches. In the recent match against New Zealand, he took seven wickets, including 5-30 in the second innings, contributing to England‘s 115-run victory.

Stokes, 35, had a challenging performance with the bat in the first Test, scoring 12 in his first innings and a three-ball duck in the second. His position as captain could be in doubt, particularly given a previous incident in 2017 outside a Bristol nightclub, which led to an affray charge and caused him to miss the Ashes tour of 2017-18 before he was cleared.

England captain Ben Stokes after being dismissed in the first Test against New Zealand Credit: bbc.com

Immediately after the recent win at Lord’s, Stokes expressed his happiness about the victory, stating, “I won’t be really happy until I get to share a beer with the boys.” The outcome of the current investigation could affect the squad selection for the upcoming second Test, potentially leading to the omission of both Stokes and Atkinson. If Stokes were to be dropped, Harry Brook, as Test vice-captain, stands to be promoted, at least temporarily.

The England team management, including Stokes, McCullum, and Key, had been backed by the ECB’s top brass, including chairman Richard Thompson and chief executive Richard Gould. This latest controversy risks damaging the reputation of English cricket once again.
